Bang!

The noise sounded outside, coming from the garden.

Bang!

I sit up, looking about me, as the sound comes yet again, further helping me realize that I had indeed not imagined it.

Why can I never seem to get a peaceful night of sleep?!

Sighing, I lift the covers off of my body, willing my leg and stump to flip over the side of my bed.

Grabbing my metal leg, I attach it to the stump in the place my right leg should be and tie it on, tight enough that it shouldn't come off or slide.

Bang!

I'm coming, I'm coming! Jeez, how can they expect me to go fast when I only have one full leg?

I swear, the disrespect I receive everyday...

Hastily standing up, I quietly make my way out of my first floor bedroom and over to the house's side doors in the living room.

Throwing the door I open, I set the scariest scowl I can muster onto my face and mutter, "What the heck do you want?! I was enjoying my first night of sleep for weeks and-"

A deep masculine voice cuts me off, sending shivers down my spine.

"It's not my fault your such an insomniac, now is it?"

I flip him off blindly because it's too dark for me to actually see where he is.

Plus, my vision sucks arse.

His chuckle shakes me out of my thoughts, the sounds vibrating off of my body like waves.

He finally decides to step into view, his 6 foot 6 stature towering over my mere 5 foot one, his naturally curly light brown streaked hair flowing on his head as he stares down at me with his mesmerizing violet colored eyes.

Focus Amina, this dude has been staying in your backyard for three months now, has yet to tell you his name, and to top it off, he just woke you up from your sleep even though he knows you are an insomniac!

"Why are you here?" I whisper, my eyes darting to the ground, then back up to his face.

An uneasy feeling settles upon me, causing me to back up a couple steps before meeting his eyes again.

Silence.

I try again, this time allowing my frustration to be heard.

"Seriously, why are you here?"

His head cocks to the side as he stares at me long and hard, as if I am a puzzle and he needs to figure out where all of the pieces go.

"Why do you think I'm here?" he finally responds, his voice causing me to shiver.

I roll my eyes.

"Obviously if I knew why you were here I wouldn't be asking!"

This dude is really testing my patience...

He stays silent, looking me in the eyes as if he can read my mind, as if he can see into my soul.

Creepy much?

"My name is Karim." he says randomly, his expression that of nonchalance.

What?

"Um, okay, Karim...why are you here? Like, in my backyard? Because you've been here for three months and counting so..."

He shrugs.

Really?

A shrug?

Seriously?

I mentally face-palm and consider throwing him into the river near my house.

I can totally pull it off. I just need to figure out how to drag him there...

"There will be no throwing of people into rivers, Amina."

My jaw drops as I gape at him.

"What the heck are you The Listener?!"

He chuckles, staring at me with amusement shining in his eyes.

"No Amina, I am not Toby from the show The Listener. I just happen to know what you said because you spoke out loud, rather loudly might I add."

To my embarrassment, my cheeks heat up. I turn my attention to the weeping willow that is eavesdropping in our conversation, leaning over us, essentially making the area cooler.

"Could you just tell me why you are here, please?"

"I could," he responds.

My eyes light up in excitement.

After a few minutes pass, I glance over at him.

"So?"

"So, what?" he asks.

"Are you going to tell me or not?!"

"You asked if I could tell you, and I responded with yes. I never said I would tell you."

"Mother fuc—!" I yell as I try to chase him around the yard.
