The life of an assassin is never an easy one for it entails death, tragedy, betrayal and lies. Of course, it's not always like this but, one can never fully leave this lifestyle to do something, or be with someone they happen to desire, nor could they ever fully settle down. An assassin never has the time for the simple things of life as there is always some type of work to be done, or a target to take care of. An assassin simply never has time for love.
These thoughts echo through my mind as his lips get closer towards mine. The desire to feel them against my own rises with each passing second but, deep down, I knew that it can't happen, no matter how much I want it. I hadn't realised just how much I've come to care for Jacob in the short amount of time that I had known him but, I knew right at this moment, I have come to care for him a great deal. However, I would have to push those feelings aside for the sake of liberating London from the hands of Starrick. Right at this moment nothing, not even my own feelings, matter as we need to focus on the mission and the mission alone.
I glanced up into his eyes and, with a look of sadness and a slight hint of regret, I slowly pulled away from him, creating quite a bit of distance between us.
"(Name)?" Jacob asked with a look of confusion shining through his eyes. I happen to catch a hint of sadness but, it disappeared the moment I noticed. 'Did he really want to kiss me as much as I wanted to kiss him?' I thought.
"I'm sorry Jacob, we can't." Was all I could say as I looked to the ground, suddenly finding my shoes very interesting to look at. Nothing but silence surrounded us as it became a rather awkward atmosphere. Not wanting to be there any longer, I turned on my heel and begin to walk away.
"(Name), please wait." I heard him call out from behind me, however, I walked on, not once looking back.
Time skip
"Hello (Name), where is Jacob?" Evie said as soon as I walked into the train hideout. At the mere mention of his name, I could feel my face begin to heat up as I recalled what nearly happened between us. Evie must've noticed as I happen to see a smirk on her face. "Oh, I see now. Something happened between you and my brother." My face heated up more as I waved my hands in front of me and said,
"No, nothing happened between Jacob and me. I mean, something almost happened but, it never did."
"What do you mean?"
"We...we almost kissed." I whispered the last word, not wanting to believe that it almost happened.
"Wait, what?"
"It's nothing, it was just the heat of the moment." Before anything else could be said, we heard a very familiar voice speak up.
"Is that what you think?" I turned around and saw Jacob standing there with a look of hurt in his eyes.
"Jacob..." Was all I could say as I stood there wanting to say something, anything, to make the situation better but, I couldn't. "I'm sorry." With that, I ran out of the hideout, wanting nothing more than to get away.
Jacob's POV
After (Name) had left, I decided to walk around the town for a bit before heading back to our hideout, only to catch what she was saying to Evie.
"It's nothing, it was just the heat of the moment." At her words, I couldn't help but feel hurt, wanting to believe that it was more than that as I've come to care for her a great deal in the short amount of time that I have known her.
"Is that what you think?" I said.
"Jacob..." Was all she said when she turned around and saw that it was me. It looked like she wanted to say something, anything, to make the situation better but, it was too late. The words have already been said and there was nothing that could be said to take it back. "I'm sorry." Before anything else could be said, she ran out of the train, she ran away from me.
"Jacob?" Evie said after a few moments of silence. Not wanting her to see how hurt I truly was, I looked at her with a fake smile and said,
"Don't worry about it Evie, (Name)'s right. It was just a heat of the moment, it won't happen again. Besides, who has time for that when we have a mission to do?" My heart began to break at each word I said, but I couldn't let it show.
"You care for her, don't you?" I knew I couldn't lie to her, she was my twin after all and could always tell when I'm lying. With a sigh, I replied,
"More than I thought I would. I just don't understand, we haven't known her long, and yet, I've come to care a great deal about her. But, we just don't have time for that, we'll never have time for that because of the lifestyle we live."
"You don't know that."
"Look at us Evie, when have we ever had time to do the things we wanted to do? When have we ever been able to indulge in the simple things in life and not have to worry about being stabbed, quite literally, in the back? When have we had time to just live life like a normal person?" I knew my words had sparked a sense of realisation as she remained silent after I spoke. "Besides, we have to focus on taking London back from Starrick. We don't have time for anything else."
"What about after?" She said after a few moments of silence.
"What?"
"What about once we've taken London back? Would you still push away your feelings and not go after her?" My eyes slightly widened at her words.
"I hadn't thought about that." I replied.
"Anything can happen once Starrick is gone, then we are free to do what we wish."
"I don't say this very often but, thank you Evie. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to rest up. It's been a long day." With that, I walked into the carriage, that I have claimed as mine, and hung up my hat before settling down on the couch and closing my eyes, dreaming about what could happen between (Name) and I once London is free from Starrick.
