Chapter 11
I had been sat here all night. Waiting. I just wanted some news. Any news. Just something I could work with.
Apparently he went into surgery a few hours ago, but I hadn't heard anything since.
Somebody burst through the doors and ran in, asking the nurses something urgently. I didn't really pay attention until I heard him say Dans name. I stood up and walked over to him.
"Are you looking for Daniel John?" I asked him, my voice shaky and croaky from lack of sleep.
"Yeah, who are you? Do you know where he is?" he asked me.
"I was there. I'm Maisie. It's my fault he got beaten up. He's in surgery, I think, well he was anyway. They won't tell me anything." I looked down as I talked, my hands tangled together nervously.
"Hi, I'm Chris. His best mate. We've known each other since we were toddlers. I couldn't get here sooner because I was at debriefing from my last mission. So, what happened?" he asked me as he went back to the chairs and sat down.
I recounted everything that had happened, how he had stopped Mark, saved me.
"Wait, where's mark now?" he asked me.
"Oh, I don't know, we left him in the fitness suite after I knocked him out." I told him.
"Sh*t." He mumbled. He got out his phone out and dialled a number. He got up and walked a little further down the corridor. He ran his fingers through his brown hair constantly. A habit I guess. He was on the phone for about five minutes until he came and sat back down.
"He's not there. He must've left. I'd always known he would go rogue at some point. Him and Dan never got on, they'd often get into arguments and then get me involved. It all started when..," he paused and looked at me alarmed, like i caught him doing something he shouldn't. He then cleared his throat and looked around nervously before continuing. "Mark had always been a bit of a risk, he was very selfish and would only work properly on a mission if he got some sort of benefit out of it. Me and Dan had been suspicious that he had been working for Lanianos, but we couldn't get any evidence." I tried to process the information without seeming rude. I could tell there was some tension between Dan and Mark, yet I didn't realise it went back that far. But, why did he pause? What was he so set on hiding. I knew I had always been nosey, and my curious then got the better of me.
I was about to ask why he paused when a nurse came over to us, all of my previous thoughts fading instantly. We both instantly stood up, eager for news about Dan.
"He's come through surgery. We managed to get rid of a blood clot that had emerged due to the impact of the punches he had to withstand to his face and we are really pleased with his progress. He should regain consciousness in the next hour or two due to anaesthetic but, he's going to be just fine." She told us smiling. Me and Chris both heaved huge sighs of relief and then I sat down, a smile now on my tired face.
"Now why don't you get some sleep, I will let you know if he wakes up." Chris suggested. I nodded yawning, the tiredness suddenly hitting me. I soon drifted to sleep, imagining Dan waking up and being OK and everything going back to how it should've been if Mark hadn't had gotten involved.
Dans POV
My eyes opened slowly before scrunching shut again, the bright lights making my head hurt even more than it already did. My skull was throbbing all over, everything screaming out in pain. I looked down at myself. Tubes were in my arms and I was under a white sheet in a white room.
Suddenly everything came back to me.
Maisie. I wondered if she was OK. Wait, why did I care? Mark must've hit me harder than i thought. A nurse walked in and looked up before gasping.
"Oh, I didn't expect you to be awake yet. This is excellent. Ill let your friends know right away." She was about to leave when I spoke.
"Is Maisie here? Average height, blonde hair, blue eyes?" I asked her, and she smiled.
"She never left." She said before leaving me in silence, smiling involuntarily.
When I first saw her, I was stunned by her beauty. How her hair fell in waves so naturally and how her eyes were so bright and detailed, shining in the light. I had never been drawn to anyone. Sure, I got off with a lot of girls and yeah they were hot, but something about Maisie was just so different. Something pulled us together that I couldn't understand, and our chemistry was undeniable.
When I saw her in the fitness suite, it took everything in me to control myself. Her toned body and perfect figure. Why she was so self conscious i would never know. Her personality didn't fail her either. She had a great sense of humour and her laugh was contagious. When we nearly kissed in the fitness suite, I couldn't believe it. Her on top of me, my hands on her waist, it was unreal. The electricity between us was like nothing I'd ever felt before. I was drawn to her like a moth to a flame, like I never had with anyone before. Then Mark had to go and ruin it. I hated him so much. I'm so glad Maisie managed to put him in his place where I wasn't able to though, he deserved everything he got.
Part of me knew Maisie shouldn't get involved with me. I held terrible, terrible secrets. She was too innocent to be tainted by my dark past. Yet, it was like she was the light at the end of my tunnel. Something I could aim for. She had already made my life so much better, so much brighter, and I didn't know if I was ready to give that up just yet.
