Chapter 29

We left the ride with our heads low and our feet fast, us both tense and desperate. We shoved our way through the crowd, constantly knocked back and forth constantly by the party goers.

Once I came to a small clearing, I turned around to see Romero had vanished. Not a trace of him to be seen.

"Shit." I whispered and ran my fingers through my now knotted hair.

"Well well well. Look who it is." A smug voice that I'd come to hate said from behind me.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath before turning around with a fake smile on my face.

"Can I help you?" I asked, sarcastic obviously.

"Actually I think you can." Chelsea smirked, and I saw a shadow move from behind her. My focus changed for a second until she snapped her fingers in front of my face.

"Did you actually think Dan liked you?" she paced around me, looking me up and down as she went.

"Were you really that naive?" She spat in my ear. I winced but didn't reply.

"Were you aware of how much he was getting paid to get close to you? To keep you.. interested?" she taunted me, her words confusing me but I refused to show it.

"He never liked you. It was always me." she smiled, before I punched her, right across the jaw.

"I don't know why, I never liked you." I spoke, my voice loud but you could hear the vulnerability behind it.

I turned to see a very shocked, very gorgeous wide eyed Dan staring at me. My heart sunk but the anger inside me soon overpowered it.

"How. Dare. You." I stepped forward, pointing up at him accusingly.

"How fucking dare you." I shouted, punching his chest. But it was close to useless.

"No, Maisie. It wasn't like that I swear!" he shouted, while trying to grab my arms to stop my pathetic hits.

"Well then why don't you go ahead and enlighten me?! I can't promise that I'll believe any of the bullshit that leaves your mouth though." I spat, crossing my arms and looking away from him. I worried if I did look at him, all the anger may suddenly disappear because.. it had happened before and I needed to find out the truth this time.

"Yes, I was paid extra to get close to you-" I sighed and rolled my eyes before turning away, but he grabbed my arm to spin me back around so our bodies were close and our breathing merged together.

"That went wrong because I found myself falling for you more and more everyday." As the words came out of his mouth, a smile threatened to emerge as my pulse quickened. I swallowed the adrenaline bubbling inside of me.

"How do I know that this isn't just another technique to keep me with the agency?" I spoke quietly but firmly.

He placed his hand on my cheek and caressed it with his thumb. I moved my head into it involuntarily, and tingles spread through my body at the contact we hadn't had for so long.

"Because I love you. Like I've never loved anyone before. And I need you in my life Maisie." His eyes looked down at me pleadingly, us both completely silent and still until I spoke up. I couldn't just let him get away with what else he did to me.

"Then why when you were making out with that bitch. You smirked at me and winked. Why, if you cared about me that much, would you do that?" I snapped, still whispering, while that familiar feeling building in my throat.

"I'm sorry. I was just angry with you I guess, because I knew you were getting close to Romero. I just wanted to make you feel what I did." He whispered, looking down at his feet before looking back into my eyes with such intensity, it was impossible to look away.

"I'm sorry." He whispered, almost silently before he tilted his head down and lifted my chin up with his finger. Just as our lips were about the make the contact I desperately needed, someone began clapping from behind me.
