Chapter 28

The bustling crowds from below were barely audible from the height of the Ferris wheel, but the atmosphere didn't quite match the breathtaking view.

"You know, I'd never really taken a girl out on a date." Romero confessed, breaking the silence.

"What? How come?" I asked, shocked at the unrealistic idea. He shrugged in response before continuing.

"My Dad always made me put business before everything. I never had any time for girls." He stared off at the cityscape, at the lights that seemed to sparkle against the pitch black sky.

"Until now?" I questioned, leaning forward toward him, intrigued about the answer. Not because it was my 'job', but because I genuinely cared about him. He turned to look at me, our faces centimetres apart.

"We had an argument." He spoke in a hushed voice, like he was scared of anyone overhearing.

"I told him.. that i didn't want anything more to do with him or the 'business'-" he made his point by rolling his eyes and making speech marks with his hands.

"-he didn't take it well and he threatened me.. but I left before he could do anything." He swallowed and his wet eyes glistened under the dim light. I gasped out loud at the thought of his father ever hurting him. I guessed he was violent, being a mass murderer and mafia boss but never expected him to hurt his own son. I didn't know how anyone could ever do something like that.

"Well, that's all behind you now. Right?" I asked, unsure if I wanted to know the response. Romero shook his head and ran his fingers through his hair.

"It's never going to be over." He muttered, his voice suddenly strained and panicked.

"They're everywhere." He whispered at me, leaning forward until I could smell the mint on his breath. My breath fast and my palms wet, I asked the question I didn't want to know the answer to.

"Who?" My voice came out quiet and weak.

His eyes flickered behind me and my heart stopped.

"Them." And I turned around to see the ride had come to the end, but leant on the wall in the distance was a group of men, all in black, who stood and stared, right at me and Romero.
