Chapter 7

As I stepped in, I was blinded by white lights that hung from the ceiling. There were stairs in front, leading down to a huge hall with lots of tables, plastered in papers and files.

As we walked down further, I could see labs, where men and women in white coats, hurried around with test tubes and liquids, lots of people sat behind computers, typing faster than I'd ever seen anyone type before. The whole place had a really modern but manic atmosphere, everyone just seemed so into what they were doing, so passionate. Dan walked past me, smirking before he lead me up a set of stairs, passing rooms and rooms of people fighting or working out, the stench of sweat filling my nose.

After another flight of steps, we came to a lift. We stepped inside and he pressed the button for twenty seven. As we made our ascent, Dan turned towards me.

"You like it?" he asked, crossing his arms. I didn't hesitate.

"Oh my god yes, it's amazing!" I said, my voice high pitched and eager. His deep chuckle echoed around the metal cage.

"I'm glad you like it, because you will be spending a lot of time here."

Just then, the doors slid open, revealing a long corridor. Dan opened the largest of the few doors and we stepped inside the room. All of the outside walls in the massive apartment were one huge window, overlooking the whole of London. It was so breathtaking.

Modern furniture littered the tiled flooring as we made our way round the corner. When I looked up, a tall, chubby man stood staring out of one of the windows, admiring the view.

"Professor Jones" Dan said, addressing the man. He turned around slowly, a wide smile spread across his face.

"Daniel." he spoke very loudly, boldly, his voice booming across the room as his arms spread wide. Dan walked over to him, laughing softly before they embraced in a tight hug, ending with some manly slaps on their backs.

"How have you been son?" He asked Dan, his hand rested on his upper back.

"Still no luck finding John and Enrique. They move too quickly, like they know we're coming. It's odd." Dan explained. Professor John nodded and hummed, his eyebrows scrunched together. He looked up, finally noticing me.

"Oh and who might this beautiful young lady be?" he boomed, striding over to me before he took my hand, kissing it softly. I giggled, surprised at his action.

"Maisie." I smiled at him. He nodded, also smiling.

"You must be the famous Maisie Dobbs. Wow, you are just as beautiful as your mother was." He chuckled, his hands on his hips. Dan walked over and stood next to him, placing a hand on the Professors shoulder.

"Maisie, this is Professor Jones. He is the Director of the Conspiracy Specialisation Department in MI6." He introduced proudly, they must have a good relationship.

"Nice to meet you Professor." I smiled, shaking his hand.

"The pleasure is all mine." He winked. His positive aura was contagious.

"Ok, down to business." He abruptly turned and strided down the apartment and around the corner. Dan turned to me, gesturing for me to walk in front.

As I came round the corner, I saw the professor gathering papers on his desk. He pulled his chair out and sat down. I walked over, sitting on the chair opposite.

"So, you have basic knowledge and experience in one to one combat. 9 GCSEs. No medical conditions except you suffered with mild anxiety for 3 years from when you were 13. Is this all correct?" he finished, looking up at me. I nodded and mumbled a quiet

"Yes.", embarrassed of how he brought up my anxiety.

That had been a really tough time for me. Every time any attention was on me, I began to panic, hyperventilating and in really severe cases, I would pass out. I was so self conscious and when everyone's eyes were on me, I couldn't help but lose it. June and Lois had helped me overcome it, but it still happened every so often.

"Ok, good. So, you will undergo two weeks of training, 9am until 5pm, as Dan has probably already told you. Then, you will under go simulation training for a week, where you will have to react and make decisions in simulated scenarios based on real life that you may face when you are put on duty. Dan will train you, one on one. He will have to report back every night with your progress, submitting a full progress report at the end of every week to head office. At the end of each week, you will have to complete a series of assessments, also to mark your progress and see if your fit for action. You both got that?" he asked us, placing his paper back on the table, leaning forward.

"Yep, I think so." I said, looking at dan.

"Is there going to be a training brief in our apartments?" Dan asked, ignoring my acknowledgement.

"Yes, everything will be in a pack next to your beds." Professor John added, nodding at both of us. He checked his watch and then stood, me and Dan doing the same.

"I must go, I have a meeting to attend to. You can collect your keys and pass codes in the residence block from the secretary. Enjoy training, I will see you both soon." He finished.

Me and Dan bid our goodbyes before we made our way back down the corridor and down the lift, then descending the worn concrete stairs, past the fitness suites and down into the hall, full of working agents and scientists.

Dan lead me out of the hall, silent and emotionless. His back muscles moving as he walked, his toned arms swinging by his sides. He opened up the door, letting me pass before he came up next to me.

"You excited to begin training?" he asked, not turning his head, still looking round as we walked, like he had said nothing.

"I guess. Nervous though, I've never done anything like this." I said, looking down at my Uggs on the concrete.

"You'll be fine. If not, I will teach you. It's what I'm here for." I looked up at him, he smiled warmly as we came to a door, yet it didn't reach his eyes.

We stepped inside, the interior just as modern as the main building. As we approached the woman at the desk, she looked up, her brown curls bouncing around her face.

"Hi. Maisie and Dan?" She asked, looking up at us expectantly.

"Yeah." We both said. She nodded and handed us our keys and an envelope each.

We thanked her and Dan lead me up a set of stairs, to a long thin corridor, doors lining it either side. I walked along, looking at each door number until I saw mine, 105. I pushed the card into the slot above the handle, the light glowing green before I lowered the handle, opening the door slightly. Dan unlocked his door, next to mine.

"You can call room service to bring you food if you want. Meet me downstairs at 7 for breakfast. There's a canteen where all the agents go, you cant miss it." He told me, stepping into his room. His door shut with a quiet click, leaving me in the silent corridor. I stepped inside my room and closed my door.

Cold. Alone. In a place where I know no one or anything about what I'm letting myself in for. This should be fun.
