Chapter 22

"Where have you been for the last few days then, huh? Hiding?" Dan shouted at me, his face red.

"I've been training actually. Trying to do the best that I can. That's what I'm here for isn't it?" I retorted, my voice just as loud.

"You couldn't even contact me to say where you were? What you were doing? What happened?" he shouted, more angry than concerned.

"You seemed to have your hands full anyway. Surprised you even noticed." I said, lowering my voice and crossing my arms.

"Is this seriously about Chelsea?" he said, like it was the most ridiculous reason to have. He laughed under his breath and put his hands on his head, pacing impatiently. We were in the fitness suite. I had decided to come here to rid of my confusion about everything with a workout. But Dan had been waiting.

"I'm just training her. She's an old friend. Are you really that pathetic and immature to ignore me over one girl? A friend?" he snapped at me, his harsh tone making me flinch.

"It looked like a little more than a friendship from where I was stood." I snapped back, just letting the words roll off my tongue without a second thought.

"Your so jealous, it's ridiculous." He said, shaking his head. Anger bubbled inside of me, I hated it when people assumed what I felt, even if he was right, I was jealous.

"If I was so jealous, is that why I had coffee with a really hot guy earlier, and got his number?" I shouted in his face, making him pale slightly.

When Romero had finally introduced himself, I panicked. I had come up with a lame excuse to leave, and then headed for the door. But, before I could, he had stopped me and given me his number, telling me to give him a call if I was free.

Dan finally spoke after a long few seconds of silence.

"Who's this guy then?" he asked cockily, crossing his arms over his chest, making his arms bulge in the black t-shirt he was wearing.

"No one you know." I retorted, knowing I could never tell him who it really was.

Dans laugh echoed around the studio, yet it was cold and empty.

"You really think making up some knight in shining armour is going to make me jealous? Wow. Your pathetic." He spat at me, making a lump form in my throat.

I swallowed it and rummaged for my phone in my pocket. I then pulled out the folded piece of paper with Romero's scratchy handwriting. Dan turned to me, his cocky smirk now replaced by a worried expression. After dialling the number, I waited, until I heard the phone being picked up at the other end. I pressed the speaker button and began the conversation.

"Hi, it's me, Maisie." I smiled cockily up at Dan, who simply frowned.

"Oh hi Maisie, are you okay?" Romero's voice still sounded as deep and rich over the phone as it did in person.

"Yeah I'm great thank you. I was just wondering if you wanted to go out tonight." I asked confidently, still smirking at a confused Dan.

"Sure, I'll sort it all out. Where shall I pick you up?" A delighted Romero answered.

"How about Starbucks?" I suggested, knowing it wouldn't be a good idea to tell a master criminals son to pick up a girl from her home, in a secret service building.

"Sure, I'll see you there at 7." He finished. We bid our goodbyes and I hung up, crossing my arms.

"Believe me now?" I asked confidently.

He ran his hand through his hair and swallowed loudly. My smile faded away and I stepped forward.

"Hey what's wrong? Shouldn't you be happy, I can finally leave you alone.." I said quietly. He shrugged off my arm and began to walk away but I reached for him again. He spun round, knocking me to the floor in one quick sweep. I landed with a thud and sat there in shock while Dan stared at me, emotionless.

After a few seconds, he turned and walked away, out of the studio, out of the building. He didn't look back.
