"I don't like you."
The gentle voice belonging to a certain snow haired boy rang through the humid air of the cell, filling the atmosphere around him with a strange, eerie sensation. The feeling wrapped around both boys' epidermis, feeding the sense of uncomfortableness which they ended up blaming each other for.
Meanwhile a pair of emerald green eyes followed him intently as Rei spoke. The glare he carried seemed to be permanently attached to his face as green clashed with blood red.
"What makes you think I care?" The Sakamaki replied, pride seeping through his every pore.
Both boys hadn't been let out of their cells since the day they met, probably because Big Madam knew the second Rei managed to get close enough he would completely destroy the new boy, just like he'd done to the dozens of others Big Madam had so graciously taken care of.
Needless to say, there was a strange satisfaction in eating a meal prepared by your own dog. She was already used to bringing Rei a new friend, be it a boy or a girl, only to find a lifeless body the next day. She didn't understand why Rei seemed hung up on ending them so quickly without as much as a little fun time.
Rei definitely knew why, though. Nobody could replace Emi. Even if he had to destroy an entire world by himself, he'd never stop until he had what he needed right in front of him.
And the only thing he'd ever need was his Emi.
"You should care..." Rei whispered, his own gaze traveling to the object between his fingers. "I can kill you right now if I want to."
"Do it." The redhead urged, feeling a familiar fire rising up within him. He'd never been good at controlling his temper, and this guy just seemed to enjoy pushing him over the edge. "I dare you."
Suddenly a disturbing screech rang through his ears, making him cringe and squint his eyes at the boy in the cell in front of him. Right then he noticed the origin of the sound. Between his pale, dirty fingers Rei held a gleaming silver plate, obviously a knife, and was dragging it across the rusty iron gate.
Not just any knife, it was the one Emi had stolen from Big Madam, the same knife she'd thrown at Rei in a spur of anger when he mentioned her parents.
"So you have a knife," Ayato daringly taunted, releasing a humorless chuckle. "You'll have to get to me if you wanna kill me, ya know?"
Rei exhaled a soft nasal giggle at the stupidity of the boy across from him, partially feeling sorry for the cocky redhead. Ayato had no idea what he was capable of, and running his mouth was not a very good idea.
"I've killed enough people to know how many stabs a human can resist before they die." Rei spoke, his tone sounding playful but laced with a dark intimidation that only he could pull off. "Let me just say, I have near perfect accuracy when targeting jugular veins. All it takes is one throw and it's game over for you."
Although the words came out of his mouth without hesitation, Rei knew he would never do it. The idea did seem very appealing, but he wasn't going to lose one of the few mementos he had of Emi. The redhead wasn't worth it.
The Sakamaki couldn't hide the cold shiver running down his back, his teeth gritted and expression set in a scowl. Although he was infuriated by the snow haired boy he'd only met three days ago, he did not dare speak another word. The aura around Rei had turned cold, dark enough to consume him whole and Ayato could not resist the urge to look away.
"What the hell is your problem with me anyway?" The redhead growled, his eyes looking anywhere but at the snow haired boy.
"With you? Nothing at all." Rei answered, a sincere smile gracing his lips, soon morphing into a sinister one with his next words. "What you're trying to do is the problem... You think it's so easy to come here uninvited and take a place that doesn't belong to you?"
Ayato's eyebrow twitched in annoyance, clearly not able to get the younger boy's message. "I have no clue what you're talking about. It's not like I chose to be here you idiot."
Despite his words Rei could clearly read his intentions. He hadn't been the first one to deny the fact, and he certainly wouldn't be the last.
"Yeah right. Acting stupid won't get you anywhere." The younger boy said, his smile turning into a mischievous smirk a few seconds later. "Or maybe you're not acting. Maybe you're just stupid by nature."
"What'd you say to me?!" The redhead fumed, rattling the gate of Emi's cell in an attempt to break free and strangle the sly boy in front of him.
"Stupid and deaf?" Rei tutted, a playful look of disappointment taking over his face.
Ayato had to apply all the self control he didn't even have just to be able to keep his mouth from running colorful words. He could feel his face getting as red as his hair, a wave of anger replacing his blood as it ran through his veins.
"I can smell the smoke from here." Rei's bubbly laugh reached the older male's ears. "Careful, you'll fry your brain before I get the chance to do it for you."
"Shut up you little brat! Just wait until I get out of here, I'm gonna pummel you to death!"
The snow haired boy's eyes gleamed, a daring spark irradiating from them as his lips stretched into a grin. "I'd like to see you try."
"Cocky bastard." Ayato growled.
"Takes one to know one!"
"What are you? A little kid?" The redhead gritted his teeth in annoyance.
Rei casually leaned against the bars of his cell as he twirled the knife between his fingers. "I'm Rei Suzuya, and I suggest you remember that name. After all, I'll be the very last thing you see."
The redhead shot the younger boy a confused look, the glare still present in his face. "What the hell?"
"C'mon Ayato, I thought you were smarter than this." Rei grumbled, pushing strands of pure white hair out of his face. "You do realize you're never leaving this place, right? Hell, you might not even make it past the end of the week..."
The redhead was now angrier than ever. Was the younger boy threatening him? Was Rei planning on catching him off guard and kill him? Who the hell did he think he was, trying to threaten a guy as mighty as Ayato?
Every single word, however, suddenly vanished from his head in a second. The anger coursing through his body seemed to freeze all together as the next sentence that left the snow haired boy's lips made the hairs at the back of Ayato's neck stand up.
"Mama likes to receive the new scrappers with a big surprise..."
