The deadly colors of warm blood slowly pooled on the floor of the wide arena, spreading like a plague across every crack on the floor. Bodies oozing their eternal life sources, screams ringing like a symphony across the blood-smeared walls.

It clung to Rei's skin as he looked up, his crimson eyes irradiating a confused, slightly lost glow, as if he had just woken up from a deep trance.

"Hands in the air! Now!"

The figure in front of him screamed for the second time. Rei blinked, distraught beyond compare as he took a look at the people that surrounded him.

When had they gotten there? Why were they screaming at him?

"Last warning!" The man screamed once more, but Rei was in a state of frozen stupor, almost forgetting the lifeless body that cushioned him on the floor. The little child that had once shone his innocent, midnight colored eyes at Rei.

With the slow steadiness of a clock changing time his gaze traveled to the dripping knife in his hands. Then he shifted toward the figure at his front, only to find a strange contraption mere inches from his face. With the sudden intrusion his brow furrowed, recognizing the similarity between the man's object and those that Jiro carried.

"You have to wait for your turn." He mumbled.

"Its over. Hands up, or I'll shoot you right now." The man growled.

Rei's stomach began to boil, battling the indignity forced upon him by those men's abrupt interruption, not even letting him finish his show. They just kept yelling at him like he was some kind of animal, Rei didn't fail to notice the unsettled glances he kept receiving.

Nonetheless, Rei did as told, his hands steadily coming into view. Those men had barged in just when he was reaching his climax. It was his turn to scrap.

The knife flew from his blood-stained hands, cutting through the air and ingraining itself on the man's shoulder. He wasted no time, taking the moment of surprise to make his immediate escape and disappear before the others had the chance to grab him.

"That little-!"

"Don't shoot! He's just a human child!"

"Grab him!"

Orders were screamed all around him, yet his feet zoomed across the arena with the intent to get as much space between them as possible. He'd wasted his only weapon, and those men had arms that could kill him in a split second.

Staying close was the most dangerous option, even he could realize that much.

A light stinging sensation spread through his leg, making him stop momentarily to look down, only to find a stream of blood running down his pale skin. Before he could even blink, another sting spread through his shoulder where bright crimson cascaded, fusing with the blood of the foreign boy that had lost his life minutes earlier.

He spared one glance at his back, only to find out the men had their guns zoned in on his body, and for a moment he felt as defenseless as a deer caught in headlights.

His mind relinquished any type of desire for distance, he would rather die fighting than lose his life while running away. So with the might of a lion his body turned toward the guns.

However, just as he was about to charge forward, another figure intercepted his way, making him freeze in his tracks.

It was a ghoul in distress, recklessly attacking the armed men in an attempt to get out. Only then did Rei realize he was at the very middle of a battlefield between kagune and fire arms, and there he was weaponless and distraught.

Much to his surprise, however, the closest gate was wide open and deserted, starting to close before his eyes. He swallowed his astonishment and sprinted toward the gate just in time to slide under the metal beams as it closed shut right behind him. His crimson gaze widened as he took in the sight before him.

There stood Shin, his icy gaze boring holes into his own.

Both males stared each other down in a moment of mutual agreement, choosing not to speak about the fact that Shin had just gone out of his way to save the younger boy.

"Let's go." Shin's rough voice broke the silence, turning on his heels without sparing a glance at his back. Rei took off behind him, as full of mystery and silence as a starry night sky, confusion seeming to be the biggest feeling radiating from him ever since he delivered the final blow to that little boy.

Soon they found themselves crossing before the long weapon table in the hallway, Rei skidding to a halt as his eyes lightly skimmed through the weapons.

"You got shot." The coal haired boy stated, his bluntness making the younger boy chuckle.

"Is that what it's called?"

His hands circled around one of the largest knives available, weighing it in his hands before deeming it fit to yield. With a nod in approval he turned his body, ready to take off in the way he'd previously come, this time armed and ready for a fight.

He only managed to take a step before a hand pulled him back, and he was met with Shin's intense gaze pinned on him once again. It was unsettling how the older one seemed to force his way through the gateways of the soul.

"Where are you going?"

"Back to the fight." The snow haired boy replied, already making peace with the fact that the day would only bring even more confusion.

"You just got Emi back. Are you really going to run head first to your death now?"

The words made him stop. His first instinct had been to attack blindly, without thinking about the consequences. It was what he was used to doing throughout his entire life. Completely disregarding himself, because he didn't have anything to lose.

But now he started to weigh what was truly important, and he knew he couldn't risk being his reckless self.

Not after he'd just gotten Emi back.

"I know the way out. If you want to kill yourself out there, go ahead. I'll be joining Emi and the others."

And with that Shin turned around, taking off in the complete opposite direction to which Rei first intended to go.

With the long knife in his hands and his head jumbled up with a thousand thoughts, he had no choice but to swallow his pride and take off behind the coal haired male.
