"Okay Alexis pass me that desk over here." April told me pointing at the nearby desk. I picked it up while struggling a little not to drop it. "Woah their little buddy, lemme help you." Aaron said while picking up the desk for me. I tried to refuse but he already grabbed it. "You know I could've done it myself..." I muttered in disappointment.
"Sure, I'll let you do it yourself. When pigs can fly you though." He said in a cheerful voice knowing he made a joke. "Oh you can fly?" I questioned him.
"Ohhhh you got burned Aaron! Good one Alexis." April said while stacking up another desk on the others. I started laughing with everyone else while we continued to make our makeshift barricade.
I started gathering anything I could find around us to better secure the desks together so they won't fall. As I was looking I found a bunch of wooden planks laying around in the wood shop they had here. "Hey do you guys think we could use these wooden planks to strengthen the boarder?" I called out to them. Aaron and April came over to me to check out what I had found.
"Yeah these look sturdy enough to help hold the desks better!" April happily said trying to pick one up on her own. "Aren't you gonna give a lady a hand to help?" She asked. I panicked then immediately picked up the other side of the wood. "Haha you're a real riot! I'm glad I decided to save you." She said.
Outside by the garden.
"Harvest any tomatoes that are red and plump, okay ?" April said trying to teach me how to garden. I nodded and started looking at the different tomato plants all lined up. I had to wear special gloves to avoid getting my hands dirty and or cut up.
Since we were in the green house, everyone else was doing their own chores. "So how come you always carry around that teddy bear with you? Does it mean something really important to you?" April asked while going through what I assumed were carrots.
I felt my body get a cold shiver when she asked me that question. The truth wasn't ready to come out yet and neither was I." I..it used to belong to someone... I rather not tell more then that." I did my best not to try and think about what happened that day.
" Ah okay. Don't worry I won't force you to say what your not ready to say yet. Do you have any idea if your parents are still out there fighting? I know mine must be still trying to get to me..." I took a dry gulp of air and forced myself not to think the worse.
" I'm sure my mommy and daddy are still trying to find me too! My mommy being a crazy Latina, she could easily handle her self. Haha." I laughed remembering her almost beating an old lady over the last bottle of Tapatio.
"Wow. My mother was normally the calm type and my father was usually the crazy one in my family." She said giving out a laugh too. "You know... my life hasn't been all peachy. I used to be what they called a delinquent because I would get into lots of trouble as a kid. My parents were always trying to be supportive of me. They were good people..." April told me trying not to get too emotional.
Suddenly a burst of cool wind had hit us from the opened door. "Isn't Halloween right around the corner?" April questioned. Thinking about it, she was right. How could I forget Dia de los Muertos was coming! "You're right! We've been so busy worrying about surviving I forgot. My mommy, daddy and I always celebrate Dia de los Muertos the day after Halloween." I responded remembering how nostalgic it was.
