Chapter one | introverted
"A little Hibernation is good for the mind."
- Michaela ChungI lay in my bed, my lips pressed together tightly to the point where I looked like a lip-less fish. If that's possible. My hair is spread out all over my black pillows and my body is wrapped in a thick white blanket that had a grid-like pattern on it. My phone alarm was blaring through the room which I am refusing to touch to avoid the reality that is going to school.
I heard my door knob twist meaning my mother would be coming in. Instantly I jumped out of bed and over to my vanity and began running a brush through my hair to look as if I had been getting ready from the start. My mom walks into the room. Her eyes flicker from the bed to me then to the alarm clock that had been going off for the past minute. "Hadley please, next time shut the alarm off. I hate to tell you every morning but I can hear it from down stairs!" She sighs and turns off the loud ringing alarm.
"Sorry, mom." I said quickly then shooed her out of my room while I walked to my closet. She shut the door behind her and I could hear her yelling at my brothers Tai and Malik to get up. Malik was fifteen and Tai was Seventeen. We are all really close in age. We are all one year apart and sadly, I am cursed with being the middle child.
I grabbed a sweater that I had originally bought a size too big by accident but then by some miracle, oversized sweaters became a trend so I decided to keep it instead of returning it, and a pair of regular blue jeans. I had already showered last night so I am already set in that department. I also threw on some brown boots and headed downstairs.
As usual, I am ready before both my brothers. And supposedly girls take longer to get ready. I take out my phone from my backpack along with my headphones and play Islands by The xx, one of my all time favorite songs. I used my hands to brush back my curly auburn hair and tied it up into a loose ponytail.
I picked at the grape bowl sitting in the corner while I waited for Malik and Tai to come down stairs. Tai is Malik and I's ride, sadly, because he is usually the one who takes the longest to get ready. "Hey, Hadley are you in the kitchen?" My mom called from her room.
"Yeah, why?" I called back.
"Because" she started as she walked in. "I read in the paper today that your school would be hosting an earth day event. I think you should participate!" My mom said with a clap of her hands.
I looked at her as if she was crazy. "No way." She frowned as the words left my young but there's no way I could do that.
"Why not? I think it'd be good for you." She said sitting down next to me and pouring herself a cup of coffee. At this time is when I wish my brothers would hurry up that way I wouldn't have to deal with this.
"You know how I am, mom. It won't be good for me. Sorry." She nodded and took a sip of the coffee which she drank black, by the way, no sugar and no cream. I knew she was disappointed in my response but I also knew she wouldn't do anything about it.
Soon enough my brothers came stumbling down the stairs and were knocking each other over trying to get the last banana first. With a smirk, I reached forward and grabbed the banana. "Come on guys, we can't be late again." I told them. They looked at me with glares but did as I said.
We all piled in the car, me being in the back as usual. I rest my head on the window while my ridiculous brothers spoke about all the new kids that would be attending our school this year. My eyes flickered to Colliers' house where their oldest son Bellamy who was also my age, was leaving his house.
