Chapter Twenty-Seven | Tumble weed
"I like people who get excited about the changing of seasons, the sound of the ocean, watching a sunset, the smell of rain, and starry nights."
I kiss Lyra on the cheek and she wobbled left and right. She then slipped on into the cab and I waved goodbye to her. She had thrown me this amazing party and maybe, just maybe, got a bit too drunk. I walked down the empty street with a smile on my face.
Today could easily be considered the best day of my life. Tomorrow I would celebrate with my family as well. Tomorrow will also be a great day. I hummed to imaginary music in my head, enjoying the way the cold air bit my cheeks. Nobody was on the streets at this time which would make sense. It had just rained and was very cold out. Honestly, maybe even to the point where ice could be made. In this state temperatures don't have an in between. It's either hot, or freezing.
And now, at two o'clock in the morning, it could definitely be considered freezing. My puffy jacket kept me warm though and my tights kept my legs somewhat warm. I didn't bother looking when I crossed the street because there wasn't anybody on the roads. The street was wide and wasn't what you would call your 'normal street'. It was very wide so that cars could park on either side of the street and still leave the cars a lot of room in the streets for the driving.
And I thought to myself 'it'll be fine, it doesn't matter.'
I wish I had realized sooner how wrong I was.
The street had taken me extra long to cross because as I said it was wide and because my legs were cold and it was difficult for me to move to quickly.
It wasn't long until I heard the screeching of turning tired at a curve and saw headlights. The car swerved left and right but headed straight towards me.
I panicked, I went into shock. I felt like a dear caught in the headlights. My eyes widened as the car got closer and rammed into my front. I flew back and landed on the pavement, hitting my head. It was very bright. It was blurry. Everything looked like blobs unless they were directly in my face. My head felt hot. My back aches and I felt like every bone in my body had been shattered. I saw to mortified faces above me. They were shouting, that I could tell by the movement of there lips, but couldn't hear them. I heard ringing.
Flashback...
I smacked him on the head with a fluffy pillow, he fell, his chest heaving up in down. He looked like he was having trouble breathing. Breathing. Breath. He smiled and stood back up. Malik hit me on my side with his pillow, struggling to keep his grip on it, causing it to fly out of his hands and hit Tai in the face while he read his book. Malik and I looked at one another mortified. We looked back at Tai who had a smile on his face. Smile. Smiling.
Flashback...
I typed away at my phone, sending a long, reassuring message to Lyra when I felt a pair of arms wrap around my waist, and a pair of lips on my cheek, leaving me with a kiss. I turned to Bellamy with a smile and gave him a kiss. A real one. A kiss. His eyes sparkled with happiness, his cheeks dented with his smile, forming the perfect pair of dimples.
Flashback...
Tears ran down her face after seeing me in my bed when she busted through my door. I jumped out of my blankets to comfort my parent. My now only parent. My fist clenched her red blouse that was heavy with water that fell from the sky. Rain. Rain is pretty.
Flashback...
I slashed in the puddle in front of me, my small fingers wrapped around my dad's finger. He looked down at me, surprised. He told me, 'your shoes will be soaked! What about the lights in your shoes? Won't they die out?' He was talking about my twinkle toes. I shook my head furiously. I told him, 'No, these shoes are magical! They won't die out!' He just shook his head and laughed. The light in my shoes lived on after that day, I told him they were magical!
My lips were spread open the slightest bit and I thought I felt a tear roll down my cheek but I couldn't tell. I looked like what everybody had ever described dying to be like. And maybe that's what was happening to me. The bright light, the ringing, the feeling of regret.
I regret not getting out of the street on on time.
My heart squeezed together painfully but it was less painful than the pain in my ribs, my back, and my head. I could feel myself lose control over my body. I cried but the people didn't understand what I was thinking. I was scared. I wanted to live. I should've cherished those moments in my flashback. Now it's about to all wash away, and I'll never be able to remember them when I'm gone. What if I forget? That thought itself was scarier than what I imagined death to be like, but I had a feeling both were coming my way anyway.
I won't sugar coat anything.
My eyes grew heavy and it sounded like you could hear the fluttering of my eyelashes. I later realized that the yells and screams weren't coming from those in front of me, no their mouths didn't move in a way that it would if they were the ones screaming. It was me yelling. I sounded outside of my own body, growing more and more distant.
I let out a deep breath and heard the flutter of my lashes one last time. It kind of sounded like I was flying. It was calming. My eyes closed and I was engulfed in darkness. What if I forget?
