Chapter Two | Monsoon
"I find peace in the rain."
I shut the door behind me and dropped my bag by the door.thank god it's Friday. "Hey, mom!" I called out in no given direction. I flattened out my now frizzy hair that got wet in the rain and shook off any of the rain drops left on my coat and went into the kitchen.
A scream left my lungs and I shut my eyes tight when I saw a random figure standing at my patio, their back turned away from me. My heart is raced. "Hadley?! Hadley are you okay?" My mom ran into the room behind me.
I spun around and grabbed the fruit bowl off the table, not caring about the fruits that had fallen on the floor and rushed to the patio door. "Hadley stop!" My mom said. I turned to shush her. I pulled the door open and just as I was about to smash the bowl over the intruder's head he turned around. I dropped my arms to my side and back away once I realized that it was Bellamy who had been on our patio. This kid is always around.
"Hadley, Bellamy was locked out of his house and his parents are out of town until next Monday, so we are taking him in. With his parents' permission of course." My mom grabbed the bowl from me and placed it back on the table.
He smiled. His dimples showing in his right cheek. "Sorry I scared you. I like the rain." That's relatable. I shrugged my shoulders and went to pick up the fruits that are on the floor.
I shoved one of the apples into my coat pocket and put the last fruit into the bowl. I stood up and rubbed my hands together. "I'm sorry too," I said. "Mom I'll be upstairs."
A special skill of mine is making a situation way more awkward than it needs to be. She waved her finger at me causing me to furrow my eyebrows. "No you aren't, honey, you are going to show Bellamy to the guest room." She gave me the look that said you don't have an option. I hesitated before telling Bellamy to follow me.
"You don't talk much do you?" He said while we walked up the stairs. I glanced up at him. He was nearly a full inch taller than me. I'm 5'0. Fairly short.
"Not really." I said while bringing my eyes back to where I was walking. His eyes stayed on me for a minute.
"Hey, again, I'm sorry I scared you earlier." I smiled and waved my hand in a dismissing way.
"It's alright." We walked down the hall in a comfortable silence with only the sound of rain hitting the roof and windows. We stopped at the third door. "This is that guest room." I pointed at the door and then to the room next to it. "That's my brother Tai's room. If you need anything at night you can get it from him." I said and waved.
"Have fun settling in!" I said enthusiastically and attempted to go to my room but Bellamy grabbed my hand before I got very far. I spun around and took my hand back but made sure it to be rude.
"Where are you going?" He asked. I furrowed my eye brows in confusion. I pointed down the hall to the first door on the opposite side.
"My room." I told him. He pursed his lips as if he was thinking long and hard about something.
"Show me." He finally said. I was about to say something but he caught me off guard by saying something else. "Unless of course, you want your guest to be unhappy." I narrowed my eyes at him and he smiles widely. I motioned to him to follow me once again. We walked down the hall till we got to a door with my name painted across the top.
He traced the 'H' with his finger. "Cute"
"Thank you. My dad painted it when I was younger. I've actually been meaning to paint over it." I said, chewing on the inside part of my cheek. He made a funny face when I said that.
"Don't paint over it." I rose a brow. But I didn't completely disagree with his opinion. It's very important to my mom that I kept it up and I don't think I could even live with myself if I painted over the last thing I have left of my dad.
I pushed open the door. My room was very clean, making the black and white aesthetic much more pleasing to look at. I extended my hand. "Well, here's my room pretty boring, I-" Before I could finish speaking he walked over to my pictures I had hung up on my wall.
Most of them were photos of my friends, family or some kind of landscape. "You don't have any photos of you on here?" He asked turning back around and sat on my bed. I wasn't exactly thrilled that he is touching things in my room, but I figured it was something I could live with.
"Um, no. I figured I'd feel kind of conceded if I did that." He nodded and looked around my room while I took a seat on the white faux fur rug in the middle of the room.
"I like it in here. Makes me kind of happy because it's so bright." I shrugged at his statement. He rested his elbows on his knees and dropped his head into his hands, watching me for a minute or two.
"What?" I asked while scrunching up my nose, which is something I do when I feel uncomfortable. Most people, however, think I do that as a sign of being rude or think that I do that because I find them disgusting. I don't, It's just a habit and I don't mean to come off as rude or mean.
"As a form of thanks for taking me into your humble home, we agree going to a party tonight." My eyes widened as those words left his tongue. "It's more of a statement rather than a question, by the way." I take a deep breath. It's not that I'm afraid of going out to a party, It's just that I would rather spend time inside than having to go and be social. Which I guess for a teenage girl, is unusual or weird. But luckily so am I so it's okay.
"I don't think-"
"I'll let you get ready." And with that he got up and left, closing the door behind him. I sat there on the floor procrastinating whether I want to go or not. The teenager side of me says yes, but the introvert side of me says 'Why go when you have ice cream waiting for you in the freezer? And don't forget it's raining.'
I licked my lips. I have been to a party once before, and it was fun, but that was probably because me, Lyra and my other close friend Max were all making jokes about all the girls who kept stumbling their way through the crowd just to get with a boy, and laughing at all the drunk people kept calling over the steps when they tried to go to the bathroom.
I ran a hand through my hair. Why is it that the first time Bellamy and I have an actual, somewhat normal conversation, he asks me to go to a party? It's not like it would be very memorable anyway. Not because it was boring, but because everybody drinks so much to the point where they actually can't remember anything.
I paced back and forth a few more times till I heard a light knock on the door and a voice who I am assuming was Bellamy's say "Are you decent?" Which I replied with a quick yup. He opened the door and looked at me up and down. I scrunched my nose. "Are you wearing that to the party? Well, good enough for me. C'mon lets go." He said with a clap of his hands.
How can he be so enthusiastic around somebody he just met? He started to walk about but I stopped him. "Wait, no. I can't go." I said with a shake of my head.
"Why not?" He asked.
I opened my mouth to reply right off the bat. "Exactly. You won't know what it's like until you tried it." I sighed and dragged a hand across my forehead.
"Fine. Fine. I'll go." I finally agreed to make him cheer aloud. He left the room like he did before. Maybe he is right. Maybe it will be fun.
