"Alex,

I don't know how we ended up here, and I'm not sure I want all the details. All I know is this wasn't meant to be. No matter how much convincing we have done for ourselves, I know there's just not enough to keep us going any longer. Not like we would want to. The constant fighting, worry, and tears shed. I can't take any more heart break from somebody I care so much about. I thought you were the one who would protect me from anything so devastating, not the one to cause it. So I wish you well in what's ahead of you.

Love,

Riley."

Whipping the tears falling from her face, Riley signed her name to the bottom of the letter. She choked out a sob, unsure if this was what she wanted. She stuffed the paper into a white envelope. Getting up, she took the envelope with her and made her way out the front door of the small house. With shaky hands, she pushed her hands into her jacket pocket and began walking down the street. She almost couldn't contain her tears as she saw the blue mailbox in front of the place she had once called home. Taking a deep breath, she slid the paper into the box, fighting whatever urge she had to take it back.

ONE WEEK EARLIER

"This is crazy." Riley sighed, reading over a piece of paper.

"What?" Alex asked, making dinner for the two in the kitchen.

"My sister. She wrote me a letter."

"You have a sister? How come you never told me?" He peered at her from the other room.

"She lives in Oklahoma. It's where I was born. I never told you about her because I try my best to pretend she doesn't exist."

"Harsh."

"If you only knew."

"Knew what?"

"Why I want nothing to do with her."

"Could you tell me?" He asked, thinking the answer would be no.

"She's a year older than me, and thinks she's the best thing to walk this planet, but she's fucking insane. I've put up with her for eighteen years of my life before I moved to Maryland. I can't tell express to you how happy I was to get away from her psychopathic self. You know, she's held a knife to my throat more than once." She told, calmly.

"And she wrote to you?" He asked, walking out to her, with two bowls of pasta in his hands, placing one before his girlfriend.

"Yeah." She sighed. "She needs a place to stay for a bit. She says here: I miss you baby sister, and right now you're the only person I can turn to. Jason, my ex boyfriend, won't leave me alone and he's making threats. Could I please, please stay with you for a little while until this blows over. You're the only one I can trust."

"Do you want to let her stay here?" Alex questioned, taking a bite of his food.

"Well, I don't know. She's insane... but she is my sister."

"I think you should let her." Alex suggested.

"Okay." Riley smiled and reached in her pocket for her phone. "I'll call her now."
