As the two lovers parked their car in Alex's mother and father's driveway, Riley began to feel a knot in the pit of her stomach. She didn't know how Alex's parents would feel about their relationship since it almost killed their son.

"What's wrong?" Alex asked, noticing the nervous expression on Riley's face.

"Huh-what? Nothing." She shook her head, fumbling to pick up the grocery bags on the floor by her seat.

"Riley, I know you too well to not read you like a book." He sighed. "Tell me what's wrong?"

"What if your parents hate me?" She bit her lower lip.

"Why would they hate you?" Alex tilted his head.

"Because I almost killed you!" She cried out.

"Baby..." He gently held Riley's face in his hands, making eye contact, but she looked down. "Babe, look at me. All of that... it was my fault. I took things too far. Don't for a second put that blame on yourself. Don't even consider it."

She nodded, causing him to smile a wide smile.

"Are you ready to go inside?" Alex asked.

"Yeah." Riley said, finally returning the smile.

"So, Riley...how have you been?" Alex's mother, Isobel asked staring her down from the other end of the dining room table as she took a sip of her wine.

"I'm doing really well, how about you?" She responded, nervously.

"Better recently, now that Alexander is okay."

"Mom." Alex interjected, giving his mother an annoyed look.

"I'm sorry Alex." His mother snorted. "My life has been bloody hell without you around. I'm constantly nervous about what's going on in your life. This girl is running your life and you're completely oblivious!"

"Isobel!" Alex's father, Peter, cut his wife off causing a silence to fill the room. "Riley, what she's trying to say is that you've caused this family quite a bit of pain."

Riley took in a deep breath and pushed herself away from the table. She collected her things that rested on the floor beside her.

"Thank you for this... lovely dinner, but I have to get going." Riley's voice shook as the tears reached her eyes.

She quickly walked towards the front door, the only sound to fill the room was her heels clicking against the hardwood floor. She could soon hear Alex running after her as she slammed the red door behind her. Reaching into her purse, she pulled out a pack of cigarettes, selected one, and lit. Breathing in the chemicals and releasing smoke. She was broken. Not like she was exactly easy to break. There's only so much a person can go through before they're scarred for life. It's hard to notice the scar after a while, but it's still there. It's more prominent some times than others. Riley's was bleeding all over again.

"Oh, God." She heard a voice from behind her. She closed her eyes and inhaled the toxins from the cigarette. There was no need to look to see whose voice had expelled disappointment. Alex. Obviously it was him. He was the only one who cared enough about her smoking habbit. She smoked when she was upset. She smoked when she was angry. She smoked when she was stressed. Hell, she would smoke when she was happy if given the chance. But she was never happy. Riley was a walking disaster. Everything she touched fell apart. Look at Alex, for one. He was always such a vibrant person before she came along. Now it's like a cloud hangs over them. Ready to burst at any moment. Troubles poured down on them like the worst storm.

"Are you sure we're okay?" Riley asked, throwing her cigarette on the ground and grinding it down to bits with her foot.

"What do you mean?" Alex asked, moving closer an close to her until she could feel his breath on her neck an his hands on her hips.

"Do you love me?"

"Of course I lo-"

"Answer this instead; Do you love me enough to hold me when I'm crying over the most stupid things? Enough to forget our past? Enough to not listen to what other people have to say? To be with me forever, to let me be your life, to trust me? Do you love me that much?"

"I love you more than that." Alex whispered, bending slightly to place his head on top of hers.
