I sat in front of the fireplace with a blanket wrapped around me and a warm cup of tea in my hands. My parents talking in hushed voices in the kitchen. It was obvious they were talking about me, so why would they even try to hide it. Knowing them, they were going to confront me about it anyways.
"Riley, honey." My mom started. "Not that were not happy you're here... but it's a bit of a surprise."
"Yeah." I rolled my eyes, knowing where this was going. "I don't think I'm ready to talk about it."
"We need to know in order for you to stay in our house." My father cut in.
"Now, Chris. We don't want to scare her into telling us." My mom corrected my ass hole of a step father.
"Okay... I'll tell you." I snapped, not wanting to hear another fight. "What happened was... When Nikki moved in with Alex and I... Her and Alex instantly got along. They acted like they had been friends forever. Then she just fucking swooped in and took him while he was in a happy state. I know he's a just a boy who lives of his emotions and never second guesses his decisions when they first come to mind. I understand that he's impulsive and probably wasn't thinking... but I shouldn't have to worry about him all the time. I can't constantly baby him. I can't deal with this. I just can't"
I could feel the tears stinging at my eyes. I fucking hate this feeling. What feeling, you ask? The feeling when you feel like your life is over. Every moment from this point on is worthless. There's no point in living.
"Well, Riley, you should have known your sister was going to do this. She's always been this way. It's nobody's fault but your own." My step father exasperated.
This just made me sob harder. Nobody was there for me and I finally realized that. My boyfriend... or EX boyfriend... is a cheating douche bag, my sister's a conniving whore, my step father is an absolute ass and my mom wasn't going to get in the way if it meant Chris being mad at her.
"Well Riley, why don't you go upstairs and get situated in the guest room." My mom suggested. "You best get cleaned up before your brother comes home. He's only 15. He doesn't need to get all caught up in your drama."
I sniffled and made my way up the stairs to the guest room. I always hated this boring white room. It made me feel like I was in a mental institute.
"Be ready by 7 for dinner!" My mom called up the stairs.
I slammed the door behind me, in reply. I couldn't wait to get out of this house and I certainly couldn't go back to Alex. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do.
---
Silence, weird looks, and quiet whispers. That's all that was going on during dinner. The tension could be cut with a goddamn knife.
"I miss you, Riley." My brother, Colby said.
"I miss you too, kiddo." I smiled at him, before taking a bite of pasta.
The room was filled with a painful silence that nothing could fill. I knew from this point on that living back home was going to be the worst experience I could even fathom.
