I walked into the elevator where Justin Pierce was leaning against the wall waiting for the ground floor. His cell phone in hand as he was texting. "So, you don't even kiss your wife goodbye?" I asked.
"I don't see how that is any of your concern."
"It shouldn't be anyone's but it just shows that you really are using her and abusing her." he looked up from his phone.
"She didn't have to tell me. She doesn't have to tell anyone. The handprint on her face says all." I said. "If I find out that you have hit her again. Whether you leave a mark or not, I'll call the police after I get done beating your ass." I said exiting the elevator.
That night, I was going for a late night jog with my dog Tiberius a English Mastiff. I saw a familiar car and realized it was Zayla. I jogged over and saw her sitting in the front seat, blood dripping from her nose and her arms over her chest and stomach. "Zayla?" I knocked on her window and she flinched back and slid out of sight. I tied Tiberius's leash to a nearby pole and tried to open the door. "Zayla, it's me, Owen." I said. I tried the backdoor and the door opened. I saw Zayla behind the passenger seat shaking and crying. "It's okay. Come here." I said. I took her hand and she eased her way out of the car. Under the street light, I could see the extent of her injuries more clearly.
"He's home." she said. "I need to go before he gets mad. He's home."
"No. You aren't going home." I said. "Stay here for a second okay? I need to get my dog and then I'm taking you to my place." she nodded hesitantly.
I untied Tiberius and put my arm around Zayla so she could use me as a support. I helped her along and we got to my truck. I helped her inside and Tiberius climbed in beside her, he laid across her lap to keep her warm and make her feel safe. I climbed into the driver's seat and watched as she hugged my dog.
"I'll send someone after your car." I said. She nodded.
Around midnight, I wasn't sleeping because of my night terrors. I was watching a movie instead. I looked up hearing the door open and saw Zayla. She sat beside me on the couch and I put a blanket around her. "Can't sleep either?" I asked.
"No." she said. "Why can't you sleep?"
"PTSD." I said. "I get bad night terrors."
"Do you ever get any sleep at all?" she asked.
"I try to. I sleep better during the day when I'm supposed to be working." I said.
"Sleeping on the job?" she asked and I nodded with a smile.
The next day, Justin appeared outside while Zayla was eating breakfast. "I need to talk to my wife."
"She's inside and you aren't going in there."
"She's my wife. Zayla get your ass out here." Zayla appeared in the doorway, behind the screen door.
"What do you want Justin?"
"You need to come home." He said.
"What are you out of clothes? Starving? Or did your girlfriend go home?"
"Don't talk to me like that."
"You'll be getting the divorce papers soon." He lunged after her and I stopped him from getting through the door. I saw that my mom was hugging Zayla protectively. Tiberius was growling from the other side of the door.
"Get off my property before I release my dog." I said.
Within a week of Zayla staying here, she was healing so much better and she wasn't hiding as much. I walked outside and saw Zayla out in the horse's stable. I walked over and placed my hat on her head. "It doesn't fit. You have a fat head." she said lifting the front of the hat so she could see.
"I guess you'll have to get one." I said.

I let out a gasp when he lifted me onto the workbench. "I'm too old for you." I said.
"How old are you?" he asked.
"27." I said.
"Psh, so." he gave me a soft kiss before deepening the kiss. We shared our first kiss the other day and I craved his kisses ever since. His lips were so soft and the hold he always had on me was so comforting and protective. His fingertips of one hand brushed down my neck and over my back. It's been so long since someone had showed me this amount of love that I almost forgot what it felt like. I leaned my head back trying to pull away from him because he was making me want things that I shouldn't be wanting so soon. I managed to break the kiss.
"You need to slow down." I said.
"No you do." he said setting me on my feet.
"Haha." I said. "Will you take me horseback riding?" I asked.
"Sure. Later though. I have some work to do." he said.
