I was sitting on the couch at my mom's sick with the flu. A bucket beside me on the floor and a cold rag on my forehead. Owen was on his way from work. He knew I was sick and wanted to come take care of me. I was asleep facing the back of the couch when I felt the blanket being moved to cover my arms. I jumped waking up.
"Shh..." Owen said. "It's okay." he took the washcloth and returned with it and a bowl of water. He sat down beside me and placed the cold rag on my forehead. "You don't look so good." he said.
"I'm probably contagious." I said.
"Oh well. If I get sick you'll take care of me right?"
"Maybe." I said making him laugh. He slid his arms around me as he laid down beside me.
"Have you been puking?" he asked.
"My stomach is empty now." I said.
"Oh good. I'm safe for now." he said pressing his face into my neck.
The following week, Owen took me to the courthouse where Justin was removed from all off my stuff and I met with my lawyer. "You sign the papers, we will build a case on him beating you, and things can start getting back to normal for you. He'll be in jail and you will be divorced."
"Good." I said. "Do you have the papers?" she slid them in front of me and I signed them. I felt like a weight was lifted from my shoulders just by signing my name. She took it.
"I'll get the sheriff to serve him the papers. Be careful. He'll on the warpath. Do you have all of your things out of his house?"
"Yes." I said.
"That's good. Call me if you need anything or have any questions."
"Okay. I will."
That night, I was asleep at Owen's house curled up in his bed with his pillow. He was at the ranch tending to the horses for his dad. I heard a slam outside and woke up. I grabbed my cell phone and pushed 2 for Owen's speed dial. "Hey, I'll be there soon."
"You aren't here?"
"No. What's wrong?"
"I heard something outside."
"Is the door locked?"
"Yes."
"I'll be there soon. Call the police if you have to okay?" Just then everything was dark. Which means either the power was cut or the wind knocked the power out.
"Owen." I said scared.
"Stay on the phone. I'm on the way." I ducked into the closet, hiding behind some of Owen's clothes and some boxes. "Zayla?"
"I'm here." I said.
"Everything's going to be okay. I promise." I heard a slam downstairs. I backed further into the corner dropping my phone. I fumbled for it and it slid out of reach. The door to the bedroom opened and I heard footsteps.

"Zayla?" I said checking my phone, we were still connected. I could hear the heavy footsteps in the background. I pulled into the driveway of the house and let Tiberius loose. He ran inside ahead of me. I ran up the stairs and Tiberius jumped on the intruder. He had ahold of his wrist, pulling him down to the floor and away from the closet. I grabbed the guy and shoved his face into the hardwood floor. "What the hell are you doing here, man?"
"Dude, it's me." I recognized Zak's voice.
"Why in the hell did you break in?"
"I heard something."
"My girlfriend is here." I let go of Zak and saw Tiberius pawing at the closet door. I opened the closet door and saw Zayla's cell phone. I ducked when she threw something at me. "Zayla, it's me." I said. She was up and in my arms instantly. She pressed her face into my neck. "It's okay."
"Sorry for scaring you." Zak said getting to his feet. "I really didn't know."
"She's going through a divorce. The papers were delivered today and her ex is abusive." I said.
"Ah, got'cha." he said. "I'll go stay at mom's. You have company." I nodded and Zak left.
"See, you're okay." I said. "I think you should stay the night. Just in case."

"Really? You want me to sleepover."
"Sure why not?"
"Because that's a little fast don't you think?"
"Too fast just to sleep?" he asked with a laugh.
"It's not funny." I said.
"I don't want to sleep with you in that sense." he said. "Not yet anyway."
I rolled my eyes. "I'll stay the night."
"Because you want to right?"
"Right." I said.
Around midnight, I woke up Owen hovering over me, his hands clamped around my throat. I coughed trying to push him off of me. ""OWEN!" I heard. I got him to let go and I started coughing and gasping for air. I went into the bathroom and closed the door.
An hour later, Owen was apologizing and he was so upset. "Zayla, I'm so sorry." I opened the door.
"I'm fine." I said. He hugged me and kept saying how sorry he was.
