~~~Alex's P.O.V. ~~~
There were about five zombies walking around the gym hall from what I could see. And there were probably more in the gym itself. Why the hell would those people leave the door open if they were only going to come back? Wouldn't that just mean more work for them? Something just wasn't adding up. And not knowing was really starting to piss me off. I was about to get up and help clear the way to the auxiliary gym but Marissa stopped me.
"You're not going anywhere," she demanded.
"But I can help," I stated.
"Not if you're feeling weak. Stay here. The rest of us can check it out. You keep the people that stay back safe."
"Marissa," Arianna called out already walking toward the gym hall. "You coming?"
"Yeah I was just telling Alex to stay back."
Marissa smiled at me and walked away. I didn't like the idea of not being there with my friends and letting them risk their lives without me there to help. They all reached the gym hall. Most of our original group went with Arianna and Marissa. There were a few new people as well. Mackenzie and Kayla stayed. That left about fourteen people for me to "watch." I sat down at one of the tables to eat a pack of fruit snacks from a vending machine and continued to think about why that military guy would leave the door open. Maybe it was just for the fun of it. But even that didn't add up. He could kill as many as he wanted outside. What other reason could there be though?
If they were coming back to raid the school wouldn't they want as little trouble as possible? Then realization hit me hard and I started choking on a piece of fruit snack. A few people came over to pat my back and I finally coughed up the damn thing. Then, in a hoarse voice, I tried to tell everyone to get their things and follow Arianna and the others. But they didn't quite hear. I cleared my throat and tried again.
"Gather everything," I said between coughs. "We have to get out of here now."
"Why? What's going on," Kayla asked.
"Those military people from before, they knew some of you were spying," I explained. "They said what they wanted you guys to hear. They're coming back tonight."
"How do you know," Mackenzie asked.
Annoyed, I answered with, "just get everything. We need to warn the others and get out as fast as possible."
Everyone gathered what they could and I lead them to the gym hall. Marissa and the rest of them must already be in the gyms. Then we heard yelling in the distance. I ran as fast as I could through the main gym and then to the auxiliary gym.
"What are you guys doing," Arianna asked when she saw us.
They had killed all the cannibals and shut the door.
"We have to get out of here right now."
"Why? Are there more of them in the cafeteria?"
"No, it's not the cannibals. Arianna they knew the others were spying. That guy must have caught them." Her face grew pale as I explained. "They wanted to let us think we had the upper hand and tricked us."
