"Melissa?"

"Melissa?"

I looked up in a daze to see my doctor waving her hand in my face.

"Oh sorry I must have dozed off," I explained.

"That's alright, I'm going to need you to explain what happened so we can get a full report on it." She said.

I have to lie to her, she can't know what happened, she will tell my parents.

"Well, I was walking in the hallway after school and I tripped on a rug, then someone accidently stepped on my arm," I lied easily now.

She looked at me like she didn't believe me but then shook her head and began writing the report. I stared at a poster of a cat wearing doctor gear while she finished.

"Ok Melissa I'm going to put this into the computer, I will send your family in to see you before we have you fitted for a cast," she explained.

I nodded and she left.

Two minutes after she shut the door it opened again. When my parents saw me they both gave me huge hugs.

"You scared us Melissa!" My mother cried.

"I'm sorry, I can't help that I'm clumsy!" I said lightheartedly. I almost had myself convinced that I tripped.

They both laughed then took the two chairs against the wall. If only they knew what had actually happened. What would my dad do? How would my mother react? I knew they would both be disappointed that I hadn't told them, but not telling them was the only option for now.

Where was Josh?

When the doctor came back in she had me pick out a color then fitted me for the cast.

Once it was on they instructed me not to do any physical activities for at least two weeks. When I heard that news I almost started to cry.

I couldn't work out!? My mom had already confiscated my gym pass, now I couldn't run outside?! Fan-fucking tastic.

My parents signed some papers and then we were on our way.

"I am going to go to Beth's for a little while," I told my parents. They looked apprehensive but nodded and got into their car.

I was debating whether or not to go to Josh's house but decided it was too risky because we lived right next to each other. I just went with what I told my parents and drove off to Beth's house.

She lived on a farm in the middle of nowhere.

I ran up to her front door and knocked twice, I heard the shuffling of feet before the door opened revealing Beth.

"Hey Mel what are you doing here?" She asked.

"Well I decided I would come for a visit and catch up a little bit," I explained.

"Oh, ok yeah sure come on in," she said opening the door wider so I could walk in.

I plopped down on the nearest chair and she took the couch.

"Oh my gosh what happened to your wrist?!" She exclaimed suddenly.

Beth still didn't know about Brady and why we had broken up. Maybe it was time to tell someone, I knew that if I didn't share it with someone I would be trapped in my own head going crazier with each ticking second.

"Ok Beth prepare yourself this story is quite long," I explained.

I jumped into the long and detailed story of what had happened between Brady and me, Beth was a great listener. She gasped and made comments about how Brady was an ass, but also knew when she had to be serious.

When I was done explaining she rushed over to me and gave me a big hug.

"I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that Mel," she whispered.

I hated having something happen to me that my friends weren't also going through, not that I would want Beth to have to go through this, it would just make things easier.

"It's ok really, I can handle Brady." I said with fake confidence.

In reality I was terrified of Brady, I knew this was only the beginning,

"I know what will make you feel better," Beth said pushing herself off of the couch.

"What?"

"We are going to ride Crash and Eddy." She said with a big smile on her face.

I jumped out of the chair excitedly and ran towards the door.

Crash and Eddy were Beth's horses, we used to ride them all over her farm, racing each other and jumping fences. I haven't ridden them in forever!

"Come on what are you waiting for?!' I yelled tugging on her arm.

"I'm coming, sheesh!" She giggled, quickly pulling on her tennis shoes.

We sprinted to the barn and strapped on the horses saddles and bridles.

I was worried about my cast but once I mounted I realized that it was going to be ok. Eddy was a good horse and had always been super mellow.

I always took Eddy because Crash is a little harder to ride.

We cantered around the farm for a while before we turned onto my favorite path.

Trees lined the grassy walkway and flowers bloomed everywhere.

It was beautiful, coming here always made the hardships of the day easier, all of the pain and suffering just seemed to melt away with each step.

It was silent but we both liked it that way.

The sun shined between the tangled branches, making everything on the path shine.

We walked for a while on the path just chatting and laughing, so when we came to the end I was disappointed.

"It was great catching up with you Mel," Beth said warmly.

"Yeah I really missed talking to you," I replied sadly.

"Come back soon ok? Don't forget about me." Her brown eyes looked sad.

I looked over at my best friend, all grown up. She was beautiful.

"Don't worry I won't," I promised, "I will see you at school tomorrow ok?"

"Alright, I will meet you at the door after first hour." She said.

We put the horses back in their stalls and hugged before I got in my car and drove away.

I suddenly realized why Beth was going to meet me at the door after first hour, she wasn't going to let me be alone with Brady. She knew that if she left me alone Brady would take me behind the shed again and hurt me.

I was so grateful to have a friend like her.
