"Why won't you ever listen to me!? You ungrateful runt, where's the basket! And why're there so few of them!" mother exclaimed throwing the bruised, apples to the ground,

and clutching the handkerchief in her raised fist.

"Do you just not hear me?! Are you mute and deaf too?!" she screamed, pacing towards me. she grabbed at my dress.

all her words flew to the back of my mind, because all i focused on was the handkerchief he gave me.

the handkerchief she held so harshly.

upon following my gaze, she grew furious.

"Did you use the money to get this trashy piece of crap too? I know you steal from me, but out of all things to buy, this?!" she accused, roughly waving it in the air.

i looked up to her, hot tears welling up in my eyes, praying that she'd stop,

but she snarled and looked away from me,
before ripping the handkerchief in two.

the tearing sound had been deafening,
as mother let the frail pieces fall to the ground.

my tears fell in rhythm to it.

quickly, i crawled towards the pieces and cradled them, shaking.

"You've really outdone yourself this time. You disappointment." she spat, pulling me up and dragging me away.

farther away from the apples scattered on the floor,

farther away from the tear stained carpet.

and biting my tongue was all i could do to ease the tears, holding the torn cloth as close to me as i could.
