I was sitting at the kitchen table. Mrs. Weasley had just made a wonderful meal of roast, potatoes, carrots, and an apple tart for dessert. It had been 4 weeks since I arrived at Number Twelve Grimmauld Place. It had taken me a while to get used to the dead elf heads lining the stairway, but I was starting to feel at home here.
Molly had stuffed me full of food because I was too skinny. Harry was a walking piece of string compared to me, but being lanky is in the Potter gene. As I was trying to eat my third plate of roast, Hermione started shouting.
"Gwen! Look!"
I did look. It was the most amazing sight for this time of year. The school owls, bringing our book lists. I retrieved my envelope from the only brown barn owl. I ripped open the envelope, only to have a small badge fall out.
I looked at the badge, realizing that it was for the Quidditch Captain. I had become the Captain of the Gryfindor Quidditch team. I shrieked so loud I scared away Harry's owl as he was getting his letter. Harry glared at me as he chased his owl up the stairs, where the portrait of Sirius's mother was screaming.
"Filthy Mudbloods, tarnishing my house! My disgusting son, letting Mudbloods and Half-Bloods and pure-blood traitors into my pure-blood home! Werewolf's too! Half-bloods, Mud......" Sirius had managed to close her velvet curtain before she could say much more.
Mrs. Weasley was congratulating me, saying I would make a good Captain, until she heard Hermione shrieking. Molly rushed out of the room to check on Hermione. Turns out, Hermione had gotten Prefect, as had Ron. Harry didn't get anything. He refused to congratulate us, or even talk. I don't blame him, because he's a better person for the job. I honestly don't know why or how I became the Captain, but that's that.
Harry and I didn't talk much over the rest of vacation. We celebrated our birthday, and Molly took me school shopping, so I could get a new broom. The one Sirius gave me, my Nimbus 2000, had been destroyed by Malfoy, when I told him he was an arrogant arse after a Quidditch game.
Molly and I wandered through Diagon Alley while we waited for Gringotts to open. We looked in some of the shops, Molly trying to find what we would need, and myself making a mental list of what new books I had to get.
Once Gringotts did open, I rode down the annoyingly fast mine shaft into my vault, where I collected enough money to buy my supplies.
I bought my books, my broom, was refitted for my school robes, and paid for a couple ice cream cones for Molly and I. With my new books and ice cream in hand, Molly and I apparated back to Number Twelve Grimmauld Place
I spent the rest of my holiday in my own bedroom with my books. I had several muggle titles that I loved, and it was clear just how much I loved them. I read my newest titles, enjoying the comparison of muggle to wizard titles. Where muggle titles completely underestimate magic, the teenage novels are all pretty much the same story written by different authors in different worlds.
When I wasn't reading in my room, I was outside in the backyard, which was protected from muggles, playing a muggle sport called football. It really was fun. I used to play in primary school, when Mum made me play a sport.
I was actually still really good. Hermione and I showed the others how to play, and we had a battle royal of Weasleys vs everyone else. Because Hermione and I were so experienced, we destroyed the Weasleys.
"Jeez Mione," Ron said after the game, struggling to catch his breath. "I thought you didn't play sports."
"Mum made me play because I wasn't active enough," she replied. "I forgot how much I loved it."
Sirius and I also hung out every now and then. He mostly helped me review schoolwork.
September first came too quickly. The Weasleys, along with Sirius in his animigus form, came to see us off. Molly kissed us all goodbye, and Arthur hugged us all. Sirius barked joyfully, and I rubbed behind his ear.
"Thank you Padfoot," I said. "I'll miss you."
Since Ron and Hermione were in the Prefects' compartment, I sat in a compartment by myself, which was fairly rare. I slept almost the entire way, which is probably why I wasn't joined by anyone.
When I awoke, the train was slowing down, and the lights had come on. I rushed around to change into my robes before the train came to a stop. I disembarked and caught Harry. He had stopped dead in front of the carriages.
"I can see them now."
He was referring to the black skeletal horses that pulled the carriages. For years, I had been the only one who could see the thesterals, and nobody knew why. Now Harry can see them too. Right after he saw Cedric die.
I didn't think too hard about it. I hoped in a carriage, with Harry following close behind. We rode up to the school, the doors practically begging us to step inside.
