I sat in my bed, wide awake. I just had another vision. My fourth one that night. Every time I close my eyes, I see my parents being tortured, or Umbridge sitting in Dumbledore's chair, or Death Eaters roaming the halls. In every one of these visions, it always ends with "the new dawn is coming."
I have been trying to sleep all night. It is the third night in a row I haven't been able to sleep. I just can't think anymore. My mind is being consumed with things I can't have, like sleep.
I sit in my bed for hours, until I see dawn rising. I pull out my uniform and head for the showers.
I turn on the water, and make it cold. It doesn't wake me up. It just freezes me to death. I eventually give up and turn on the hot water.
My eyes try to close. They want the sleep as much as I do. But I don't let them. I can't be attacked with another vision.
I am more sluggish than a zombie throughout the entire morning. I would walk up to Dumbledore's office, but I just don't have the energy. I've tried Occulmency, and it doesn't work. I've tried everything, but it's not working.
I'm so tired that the teachers are noticing too. I barely moved through my classes, just trying to retain whatever I was being taught. Eventually, McGonagall sent me to the Hospital Wing.
Madam Pomfrey gave me a Sleeping Draught. I fell into a restless sleep, vision after vision, all of them horrible, all of them ending with "the new dawn is coming." And because of the Draught, I couldn't wake up.
Eventually, Madam Pomfrey was forced to wake me up. She said I had been screaming so loud that McGonagall could hear it from the Divination Tower.
I didn't know what to do. I trudged to dinner, more exhausted than ever. George saw me immediately and ran up to me.
Once he grabbed hold of me for a hug, I collapsed into him. "Gwen, what's going on? I could hear you screaming from the dungeons earlier."
"Voldemort won't leave me alone. He keeps sending me visions every time I close my eyes. Madam Pomfrey tried to give me a Sleeping Draught, but it didn't work. He still got to me."
George picked me up, carrying me bridal style. "We are going to get you to the Common Room. I will try my hardest to get you to sleep."
Once we got there, he sent me to put on pyjamas. I trudged up the stairs, my feet barely able to move with every step. I slid on a nightdress and cam back downstairs.
He carried me up to his dorm room, which only had Lee, Fred, and himself. He put me down on one of the empty beds, and put the covers over top.
I laid down on the soft pillow, sleep just out of reach. George just stoked my hair, his hand falling into a smooth rhythm that started to send me to sleep. It didn't take long for me to get to sleep, but it wasn't peaceful. This was a new vision. George was in this one. Voldemort was killing him.
"No!" I screamed. "You can't kill him! Take me instead!"
"The new dawn is coming Gwenyth," he said in his snake like voice. "AVADA KEDAVRA!!"
I shot up from the bed, crying. I couldn't stand it anymore. It needed to stop. George pulled me into him, nearly crying himself.
"I'm so sorry," he whispered. "I didn't mean to send you to that. I'm really sorry."
All I could do was cry. I knew what Voldemort was doing. He was trying to weaken me so I was easier to kill. And it was working.
I couldn't explain why. I don't know why Voldemort was going after me, and not Harry. After months of complaining about Harry getting all the spotlight, someone finally listened to me. I was getting all of Voldemort's attention.
George held onto me tighter than before as I sobbed into his shoulder. "Make it stop George," I said between sobs. "Please make it stop.
"I'm trying. Believe me, I am."
I slept in George's dorm that night. Well, laid awake in the spare bed while everyone else slept. I listened to George's steady breathing, trying to fall asleep.
Dawn rose again, and I still hasn't fallen into a peaceful sleep. It was starting to drive me crazy.
I rose from the bed, walking over to the girl's dorms. I grabbed my uniform and tried to take another cold shower.
This went on for weeks. I would go through lessons, eat dinner, lay in bed for seven hours, and then get up, and take a cold shower.
At about week three, I was in the courtyard, trying to get some fresh air. I collapsed on the ground by the Black Lake. Some first year from Slytherin found me, and she sent someone to get a professor. She stayed by my side until a professor got there.
"What's your name?" I asked.
"Maria," she responded, trying to help me sit up.
"Maria, if any of those Slytherins try to tell you that you are soft for helping me, don't let them. We need to end this feud between the houses."
"I agree," she responded. "Just because I am in Slytherin doesn't mean I am mean."
"No it does not," I said, siting up on my own. I saw Professor McGonagall walking out towards me. "Thank you Maria."
"You're welcome." McGonagall took over from there. She helped me stand, and walked me to the Hospital Wing.
I was given a bed in the Wing. No visitors until tomorrow. I sat in the bed, staring at the ceiling. I was so bored, but too tired to do anything.
Eventually, night fell. I was preparing myself for another sleepless night, when I saw light pouring in from the corridor.
George slipped into the Hospital Wing. He tiptoed to my bed and sat down.
"I realized something Gwen. It was love that saved you and you brother, right?" he asked. I nodded. "What if love can save you at night?"
"What do you mean?"
"What if I just lay here until you fall asleep?"
I had serious doubts about this. But I was desperate for sleep. "It's worth a shot."
George laid down next to me, wrapping his arms around me. I instantly felt warm.
"Can you stay a little longer, just to make sure I don't have any visions?"
"Yeah. I can."
So he did. He laid beside me until I managed to fall asleep. And by some miracle, he was right.
I didn't have a single vision that night.
