My eyes fluttered open to noise in the dorm room. I groaned as I heard Emily shrieking. I saw a huge pile of presents by her bed. Ginny and Hermione both had similar piles. I looked down at the foot of my bed, and saw a small pile of gifts.
It's about what I expected. Hermione and I still were not on speaking terms after I ditched the meeting. Ron was siding with Hermione, and since Ron was taking a side, so was Harry. None of them were speaking to me. Ginny and Emily had noticed, but they couldn't get Hermione to tell them what was up.
Emily and Ginny both went to the meeting, but they didn't notice that I had left. I'm pretty sure Emily is siding with Hermione on this issue though.
I picked up my pile of presents from the base of my bed. There was one from George, one from Molly, and one from Ginny. I didn't think the others would stoop so low as to not get me anything.
I heard Hermione and Emily both opening their presents. I saw them both opening my presents. I had gotten Hermione a small book for her plans for the club and her favorite candy from Honeyduke's. I got Emily a pair of custom quidditch gloves that had the Gryffindor crest and her name on them.
They both admired their presents, and looked over apologetically at me. I didn't return their gaze.
I opened Ginny's present first. She got me a model quidditch team of the Chudley Cannons. They all flew around the room, playing a small game of quidditch. There was also another team in the set, the Bulgarian National Quidditch Team, who started playing against the Cannons.
Ginny started laughing across the room. She looked over at me as she held up a basketball.
"I said the wrong thing about basketball once Gwen!"
"Well now you won't anymore," I said. She started laughing.
"I swear, if there is a hoop at my house when I get home..."
"Well, actually..."
She looked a me, horrified. "You didn't!"
"Oh, but I did!" Ginny just broke down into laughter.
I ripped open the package from Molly next. She had knitted me another Weasley sweater. It was a bright green sweater with my initials, G. P., in yellow. I threw on the sweater over my pyjamas, and started on George's present.
I let out a quiet gasp as I pulled out the present. It was a small necklace, a sliver braided chain with a charm of a unicorn. It was almost an exact replica of one of the unicorns we saw grazing in the field. Even down to the small scar on its face.
There was a note in the bottom of the box. I put on the necklace, hiding it underneath the sweater and read the note.
Gwen,
Don't judge me for how creepy this may sound, but I swear, I mean well. When I would see the unicorns grazing every morning, this unicorn always reminded me of you. She has a long scar going down her face, and the other unicorns used to leave her out because of it. But after a while, she made it clear to them that she is different than the others, but she isn't held back by those differences. In fact, she is the one who is the most respected because of it.
So whenever people frustrate you because they don't think you're special enough, remember this unicorn. She is different and look where she is now. You can be as important as you want to be, even if everyone else holds you back. Just give them time, and they will realize how special you really are.
