Chapter Four: How to Choose the Perfect Swim Trunks

Joaquin: Saan tayo?
Me: Depends on you. Ano ba gusto mo bilhin? Branded ba or generic?
Joaquin: No idea eh. Uhm, I wanna buy two swin trunks na para T/TH hindi ko na worry yung laundry kung isa lang, if ever.
Me: Ah sige.
Joaquin: Saan ba maraming choices?
Me: Wanna go to Gateway Araneta Center na lang?
Joaquin: Sige, hindi ba malayo for you? Where do you live ba?
Me: Xavierville lang. I live with my Tita because hassle if I go home pa sa South from school.
Joaquin: Cool! Hatid na lang kita after.
Me: You sure? Baka out of the waya na.
Joaquin: No, I live in White Planes lang. Same area.
Me: Okay.

So, kuwentuhan on the drive to Araneta Center. I learned na true blue kid pala itong si Joaquin since grade school. Magtataka na ako if ever hindi. Sabi niya he was waitlisted for admission. I realized na totoo pala yung mga students na even if galing sa high school ng university, hindi automatically admitted to the college either because average lang ang test scores nila or mas maraming qualified from other schools. Sabi rin niya na "pressure case" din siya because alumnus ang Dad niya. Almost less than one month before freshman orientation na niya nalaman if ma-admit siya or not. And willing naman siya to enroll sa second choice school niya pero his Mom insisted na dapat through and through doon siya. Developmental Studies yung course niya. Me naman, home schooled ng elementary then nung high school, enrolled at a private school located sa isang exclusive subdivision sa South cause we lived in Parañaque. Ngayon, I live sa bahay ng aunt ko na over-achiever sa may Xavierville para daw may kasama siya at malapit sa school. Tatawid na nga lang ako, ang reklamo ko pa, ano?
Interdisciplinary Studies ang choice ko cause di pa naman ako decided what I really want sa buhay. Si Joaquin naman daw gusto mag-travel in his line of work kaya Dev Stud ang course niya.

Nag-decide kami to check first at a major department store para just in case wala kami magustuhan, doon na kami sa specialty stores na sell swimwear exclusively. Sa menswear department, may mga swim trunks pero I could see sa reaction ni Joaquin na hindi niya type. For me, they were okay pero napaka-generic. Habang hawak ko yung isang pair ng trunks, napatanong ako.

Me: Joaquin, what kind of trunks would you want to wear ba?
Joaquin: I don't know eh, anything na looks good on me, I guess.
Me: I doubt na may hindi bagay na damit sayo. I bet, balutan ka lang ng tissue, you would still look good in it. Swimming trunks pa kaya?
Joaquin: Seriously? Uhm, paano this one?

Kumuha si Joaquin ng neon green na skimpy-type trunks na naka-hanger pa from the rack. Tapos smile siya na parang naughty boy while waving the hanger. Medyo unexpected yung ginawa niya and I was laughing silly.

Me: Sige nga, try mo?
Joaquin: Don't dare me. Baka gawin ko.

Pause lang muna, Lord. Ah may gusto ba pahiwatig to or is he just being game? And now naisip ko, kailangan ba talaga i-fit yung swim trunks or you just make hula depending on the size?

Joaquin: Hey, you okay?
Me: Ha?

Sheht! I blanked out. Na-blanko ang isip ko habang nagbibiro si Joaquin with the neon green swim trunks!

Me: Sorry, napa-isip lang ako if kailangan talaga natin i-fit yung trunks.
Joaquin: I guess so. Yung girls nga have to fit their bikinis, di ba?
Me: True. Ah hindi mo ba susunduin yung girlfriend mo or ihahatid sa bahay nila?
Joaquin: Nah, may sariling driver si Nerissa. And hindi pa siya settled sa schedule niya so dapat mag-fit sa priorities niya in this order: Family, Church, Studies, Joaquin, Friends, and Fun.
Me: Okay lang sayo, maging 4th sa priorities?
Joaquin: Yeah, got used to it na.
Me: Gaano katagal na?
Joaquin: Junior Prom date ko siya. We were set-up by my friends. Pero midway senior year na when we started officially dating.
Me: If you don't mind me asking, how is she as a girlfriend naman?
Joaquin: She's a nice girl. Kailangan ko lang talaga mag-catch up sa bilis niya. She's sweet, very attentive when she has time.
