"Melanie, no!" Joan held onto Melanie's arm, keeping her from running away.

"Let me go!" Melanie released from her Nana's hold and ran down the hospital corridor. She stopped at the door and felt her heart fall to the ground. Everything stopped and Melanie lost it.

"No, no, no, no, NO!" Melanie shouted and clutched her heart. When she didn't feel it beating, she fell to the ground in the middle of the corridor.

"I know, I know." Joan frantically pulled Melanie to the wall and sat on the floor with her. She pulled her granddaughter into her side and cried along with her.

"Breathe, Melanie!" Joan demanded her granddaughter to breathe when she felt her whole body shaking. Joan could feel the vibrations on her body and tried to calm Melanie down. In an instant, Joan's world came crashing down again.

"Melanie! Melanie, wake up! Doctor!" Joan picked up her unconscious granddaughter and handed her to one of the doctors in the corridor.  He rushed down the hall with the 9-year-old girl in his hands.

"Code blue!  Unconscious child!" The doctor yelled as he rushed to put Melanie onto one of the hospital beds.  He was joined by other doctors who were rushing to help Melanie.

Joan stood outside of the hospital room that Melanie was put in and watched everyone work away.  Joan couldn't bare to see Melanie getting shocked by the defibrillator, bringing her back to life.  Joan looked away and looked back when the doctors stopped working.

"She's fine." One of the doctors said as he saw Joan waiting in the hall.  She sighed with relief and went into the room.

"What is wrong with you?  Why weren't you breathing, Melanie?!" Joan cursed at Melanie, not understanding why she wouldn't breathe.  Joan may lose Cheryl soon, but Melanie won't be going anywhere.

"I don't know.  I kept trying to breathe, but I couldn't.  I kept seeing Mam in that stupid room-" Melanie rambled on and just stopped to burst into tears. Joan felt bad and went to her side and held Melanie close.

"I know, honey. I know it's hard." Joan kissed her granddaughter's cheek and looked at her face. Melanie has such a resemblance to Cheryl and that's all Joan can think about.

Melanie sat in the corner of her mother's hospital room, waiting for her to wake up.  She looked at her mother's unrecognizable face and tried to remember all the times when it was recognizable.  Melanie could hear Cheryl's voice speaking to her in her mind.

'Hey, baby!'

'Come cuddle with us, Mel.'

'You look beautiful, baby.'

'I love you, zillions.'

Melanie felt the tears rolling down her cheeks and thought it was over. Melanie created this preconceived idea in her head that Cheryl wasn't coming back. Cheryl is already gone.

"Mel?" Joan waved her hands in front of Melanie's face and got her attention.

"Sorry." Melanie apologized and stood up from the seat. Joan held out a hand for her granddaughter to take and walked them to the canteen.
