life goes on and it goes on pretty well....
Until Raven wakes up one night knowing that something is wrong.
Very, very wrong. (Which is confirmed a mere minute or two later when Starfire barges into her room. "Raven! You have to get to Olso-"
But the mage girl is already opening a portal to the Olson Street where Damian and Nightwing were on a stakeout to catch some weapons dealers. She knows, she feels it. Her link to Damian has been completely blocked off and it's NOT her doing. It's like his mind is being hidden from her.
And also, what scares her the most is that her father is unusually quiet.
Trigon is almost never quiet; Raven just literally blocks him out most of the time. Trapping him under layers and layers of her magic which have only grown stronger over the years. Yes there have been a few incidents but Raven had learned from them. She had learned to use her magic, a force to be reckoned with to stop her father from trying to possess her, from trying to escape through her.
But she had it seemed over looked something.
And as she stares in horror at the form of Damian Wayne possessed by Satan himself, she wants to kill herself a thousand times over because HOW could she let this happen?
His skin has turned from its usual tanned color to the red of her father's kind, in place of the green orbs that remind her of summer are four eyes of fire filled with anger, hate, revenge and all else that's bad in the world. Raven realizes with the sickening feeling of her world falling away from under her feet that in all her effort to protect herself, she's forgotten to protect the man she loves.
And it takes all of the Titians to pin him down so that Raven can enter his mind.
It's chaos. It's Trigons presence seeping its way into Damian through the conduit that is their bond. The bond had been as strong as it had ever been, and on some sort of power charge for at least a week and Raven guesses that the connection had just become strong enough for Trigon to go from her mind to Damians. And she knows that she has to stop this. She knows she has to get Trigon to let go of Damians mind before his body gives into the strain. Because Damian isn't Raven, she isn't part demon; he isn't even an Amazon, or a Kryptonian or a metahuman. He's just human. And a human maybe able to be a vessel for lesser demons for a long period of time but they wouldn't be able to handle the strain of being possessed by something like her father. So she does what she has to do to save Damian.
She cuts the string that lets Trigon use him as his puppet.
It's more painful than anything she's ever been through before and she's lived in hell.
The screams are ripped from her throat but she barely notices because in her mind she can see it. She can see the bond flaring as she rips it apart. As she severs it. As she destroys the link that they had spent so long building. There are no words that can describe the agony that severing a soul bond is. And she feels her father being torn away from Damians mind, she feels him clawing to stay where he is as she drags him back. She swears through the anger and the bitter pain that she will lock him away so deep in runes and magic both dark and light that he'd never EVER get out again. She would scavenge all the texts she could find and take and beg for help from most of the high sorcerers and sorceresses from around the world to help lock her father away. To make sure that this time, he had no loopholes to find.
This time she would make sure that she protected the world, her family from him. But that would be later. Right now she locks her father back in the shard. And she drains her magic to within an inch of her life and then the heat wears away. Leaving hurt, and the edges of her vision go black and the last thing she see's Damian, unconscious but back to normal before she too collapses.
And when she wakes up Kori is with her in an instant. "Take it easy Raven," she red haired alien says, gently pushing her to lie back down. Her throat is dry and her body hurts, her heart aches and her head is pounding. She's almost scared to ask because anything could have happened between when she collapsed and now. "Damian?" she asks, her voice coming out as merely a croak. Kori hands her a glass of water and she gulps it down thirstily. And then she looks at the woman who's the closest thing to an older sister she's ever had.
She's not meeting her gaze, and seems nervous.
"Kori? What is it? What's wrong with him?" and she tries not to cough, but fails miserably and ends up having to drink another three glasses of water. It's after that, after she sets the third glass down and fixes her expectant blue violet gaze of Starfire that the older woman speaks.
"He's fine. He's alive. But he's still unconscious."
"How long has it been?" Raven asks.
"About a day" The dark haired girl nods because yeah, she guesses that's normal.
She'd heal Damian herself but her powers were completely drained and it would take a while for her to recover from THAT. The absence of their bond leaves her mind cold. It's still there of course, only it's like it was in the beginning, when they were barely friends. And the fact that it takes up so little space, and is dim compared to what she's grown accustomed to makes her realize how far they'd come. How close they'd gotten. The loss of all their progress was awful, but Raven thinks as she brushes Damians hair out of his forehead, that they can do it again.
Their bond wasn't what made them love each other; their love was what made the bond. As long as they had each other they could do anything.
Except they don't have each other because Damian doesn't REMEMBER.
