And Raven wakes up the next morning with an arm around her waist and a sleeping Damian next to her. His face isn't really peaceful, but it's not troubled either. She guesses that if she moves he'll wake up, so she stays still while the sun rises. It's the first time in a while that they haven't been up, dressed and ready to start the day before sunrise so she guesses that this counts as a lazy morning. It's just a bubble of them and quiet and she feels safe and warm and if this kind of love that penetrates her soul and consumes her is what mornings after with Damian are like She hopes to have many more.
(They do.)
Their mornings after are gentle and quiet and spent in comfortable silence save for a whispered 'good morning'. They get up after sunrise, very late for the two of them and shower and sometimes they make breakfast for everyone while listening to music. (Needless to say the first time this happened it freaked most of the team out because Raven- no never mind Raven DAMIAN made them breakfast?!) Other times they get dressed and stay in bed for a while reading in compatible silence. Either that or they kiss.
These kisses are lazy, slow and sweet.
They usually share this type of kiss on morning such as this or straight after sex when their tiered and content and wish that they could take that perfect moment and live in it forever. At first, all the Domesticity that Raven brought into his life had scared Damian. Because he wasn't used to it, because it was new, different, and not something he ever expected to have even while dating Raven. He just didn't think that people like them could have something as normal and simple as that. But they do and it doesn't scare him as much anymore.
(One day he hopes it won't scare him at all.)
But something that DOES scare him, and will probably always scare him to some degree is holding a newborn baby. Because new borns are so tiny and fragile and Damian is afraid that he'll break it. Her. His half sister Helena Wayne had come into this world screaming at the top of her lungs (and would continue to be just as loud when she was older) while the Joker decided to go on a crime spree.
It was a very eventful night.
But anyway, now Damian holds Helena, barely a day old yet and she's small Damian wants to protect her. Keep her safe.
'Aww your big brotherly instincts are kicking in' Raven teases. 'She'll have the lot of you wrapped around her little finger,' And Damian can't exactly argue because she's right and she knows it.
Now, on the matter of their bond. As fun as it had been living without it, they'd both decided that they should probably sort it out. The minute Raven touches the bond they're bombarded with memories, memories so many memories. But they aren't THEIRS but at the same time they are. Images flash through their minds so fast that they can't really make sense of most of them, but Raven doubts that they are supposed to. It's a sensory overload which leaves them both unconscious on the floor of Damians room. When they come to the images are gone but the bond is thrumming with energy. Damian clutches his head. "What WAS that?" Because suddenly he remembers flashes again, though not as intense as before. He remembers tiny details but their starting to slip away. He tries to hold onto them. Ravens hand brushes his. "Don't bother, they're just echoes. Past lives." She says. He nods and closes his eyes, leaning back against the side of his bed.
"We...in our past lives...we weren't always together," Because this he remembers.
"Damian, you're my soul mate. As the myth goes, we were once one being but then our soul was torn apart into two, left to find each other over and over again. Each life we live we are different people, the same soul, carrying things from before but we're different. Soul mates don't necessarily need to be romantic, it just means that they're the person that'll understand you the most....but I guess even that depends on circumstance. We don't always end up together; sometimes we don't ever meet our soul mates, or any bond mates. Sometimes we fall in love with bond mates or people who aren't connected to us by ties like that at all. In our past lives we've been lovers, best friends, one of us has loved the other but the love was unrequited romantically, we've probably been related by blood too." She says this gently, but towards the end her voice wavers a bit.
Fear and uncertainty flicker across her face.
"Damian, you...I thought you knew this. You DO understand that just because you have my mark it doesn't-" "I know," he says cutting her off, his voice gentle but firm. He takes her hand and brushes his lips over her knuckles. He understood that being soul mates wasn't and obligation, he wouldn't be here, like this with her if he didn't love her. He just ignorantly assumed that they'd always fallen in love in each life. But strangely, this is better; because it means that he has and always will love her in every way.
"But there's something I don't understand. If your soul mate doesn't have to be romantic, then what's the difference between a soul mate and a normal bond mate?" "Well, people like Jinx....bond mates like that are either fragments of my soul that became their own or other souls who have fragments of mine. And those who are enemies....mortal enemies like that are actually rare. I'm not sure how that happens. You know that Zatanna and I are like that right? We have some sort of natural dislike for each other, so one of us probably did something horrible to the other in a past life and we're just carrying the hate from that throughout our lifetimes."
And Damian thinks that this magic shit is complicated. (He's always known this, I mean, it's like a fact. But sometimes it just hits you exactly HOW bizarre it can be.)
But anyway, their bond. It's actually not very different from before. It's just very charged up and Raven says that the charge will probably never fade, so they just need to get used to using it without letting it overwhelm them. Easy. (It's really not, and they end up unconscious a few more times before they call it a day. At it takes them a month before they get it back to normal. ) And it goes like that.
Life goes on and it goes on pretty well.
