I was greeted by birds chirping. Quite literally, someone had opened my window and I could hear the birds clear as day, not to mention feel the cold breeze.
I shivered and closed my window. It was probably my mom, but what was she trying to do freeze me out? Well, now that the cold had woken me up I decided might as well get a jump start on the day. It was only 5:30 so I had plenty of time before classes.
I took my good old time warming up in the shower. I washed my hair, which let me tell you, is not a cheap thing to do when your hair is a few feet long. Once I had finished my shower I got dressed and made myself some coffee, because who doesn't like a nice cup of coffee on a cold day?
I sipped at my coffee while doing an assignment that was due on Friday. I still had a few minutes before I had to leave so I decided to do the assignment later and play my guitar in the time I had left.
I pulled out my guitar from its case in my room and checked to make sure it was in tune. I had to adjust it a bit, which was expected, considering I hadn't played it in a while. I strummed a few chords to warm up my fingers before I started playing a song.
By the time I had finished the song it was time to go so I put my guitar away and grabbed my bag. I headed out the door after calling goodbye to my mom. She was probably still sleeping, but there was no harm in saying bye anyway.
The day flew by my classes were some of my favorites so it really made the day go by quickly. I got some time to talk to Rachael before she had to leave, and I had to go my job. I rushed home and quickly changed.
"Mom what's for dinner?" I yelled downstairs as I finished lacing up my second shoe.
"Mac and cheese." She said back more softly then I had.
"Okay sounds good I'll be down in a sec." I went downstairs with my phone in hand.
She was sitting at the kitchen table with her head on her hands. She looked up when I walked in and I gasped inside. She looked horrible, it looked like it was more then just problems with my dad. It looked as if she'd been drinking which so wasn't like her at all.
"Hey you okay mom?" I asked taking a seat next to her.
"Yeah." She said looking absent-minded. She took a drink from her water bottle and it looked like it took a lot of effort to swallow.
I was suspicious and grabbed the bottle from her.
"What are you doing?" She asked her eyes flashing with anger.
"Sheesh calm down just curious what you're drinking." I said.
"It's water." She said defensively.
I highly doubted it was just water with the way she was acting. I took a sniff of the bottle and wrinkled my nose it smelled of alcohol.
"Really mom? This isn't good for you." I said shaking my head. I wondered how much she had drunk hopefully not to much.
"Stop telling me what to do!" She said clenching her teeth.
This was totally unlike her to yell at me and I was worried about her.
I ignored her comment and went over to the sink and poured the whole bottle down. I looked in the trash and this time I gasped out loud. There were three empty bottles in it.
"Mom. You need to stop." I said throwing the bottle away. Come to think of it she could have been drinking for days. I hadn't really noticed, but yesterday I didn't much of her. Who knows when she started drinking.
"Stop." She said but it came out feebly.
I sighed and went over to her. I helped her stand and when she didn't resist I led her to her room. She was swaying on her feet, and collapsed into her bed when we reached it.
"Now rest." I said firmly. I laid a glass of water and some medicine by the bedside for when she woke up with a headache.
"I'm so sorry." She whispered softly her eyes slowly closing.
"It's okay mom." I said tucking her in and giving her a kiss on the cheek. She was still my mom and I knew it was so hard on her when dad left. I just didn't want her injuring her health this way.
Her eyes shut and she began snoring softly right away. I flicked the light off and went downstairs to eat my dinner. I washed my dishes and placed the leftovers in the fridge. I grabbed my bag and headed out for work.
I arrived right on time and I rushed inside to start my shift. I gave a quick hello to Jamie and got my apron on. My shift was pretty dead not many people came. There was ten minutes left when in came walking no one other then Sam and her gang.
I sighed and forced a smile on my face. Jamie had just gone to the bathroom so I was the only one out at the registers.
"Hello, how may I help you?" I asked with a smile like I always did.
"Umm... I'll have a caramel latte, and please don't take forever I have places I need to be." She said rolling her eyes.
"Okay that'll be right up." I said ignored her rude tone.
I turned around and made her latte. I made sure to put the right amount of everything. No matter how much I hated someone I never gave them a worse drink then anyone else.
"Thanks. Do you drink a lot of coffee? I mean something has to fill up your empty head right?" She said and her squad giggled before walking away.
I gritted my teeth to stop myself from saying something less than acceptable back to her.
"Hey, don't let her get on your nerves." Jamie said dropping a hand onto my shoulder. She didn't know that she went to my college and bullied me there, but I guess she had seen how she treated me.
"Yeah, I try not to." I said throwing her a quick smile.
She nodded and locked up her register. I did the same to mine and followed her out the door. I locked it behind me, and waved to her as she walked over to her car which was across the lot from mine.
I drove home my mind was frantic in worrying about my mom. I had forgotten to check the house for more alcohol she could have dug into a secret stash when I was gone. I hurried home speeding on more then one road. I made it in record time and dashed inside the house. I ran to her room and breathed a sigh of relief when I saw she was laying where I had left her softly snoring.
I went to bed after checking and getting rid of the bottles she had stuffed under her bed. I slept horribly I constantly woke up in a sweat worrying about my mom. Every time I would check on her and to my relief she was fine.
I had just checked on her and it was only 3:00 in the morning. I yawned and shuffled back to my room. I flopped on my bed and pulled the covers up.
I fell asleep in a few minutes only to be awakened by a loud scream. I jumped up and ran to my mom's room. She was thrashing in her sheets, and covered in sweat.
I flicked on the light hoping it would wake her up. It didn't work so I went over and shook her gently.
"Mom wake up." I said.
She jumped and her eyes opened. She looked confused as to why I was standing there.
"W-what?" She stuttered.
"You were screaming in your sleep mom." I said pulling the covers back.
"Oh, you go to bed I'll take care of myself." She said rather firmly.
I sighed I knew I wouldn't win if I argued to stay and help her. I left and once again laid down to rest hoping the next time I woke would be morning.
