"Honey, wake up you're going to be late." I jolted awake as my mother gently shook my shoulder.
"Im awake." I mumbled my eyes half open.
"Okay good." She stood up and walked out after giving me a kiss on the forehead.
I kept my eyes open because I knew the second I closed them I would be fast asleep. I rolled out of bed and stumbled to the bathroom. I splashed cold water on my face which woke me up a bit more and got ready.
Today was just supposed to be a normal day. Classes, homework, work and sleep. But at the beginning of the day I had an inkling of a feeling that today would be different.
The day proceeded like always until lunch. I was sitting down at our spot when all of a sudden someone screamed. It wasn't a girly scream, no, this was a bloodcurdling scream that chilled me down to my bones.
I immedietly jumped to my feet and looked around searching for the source of the sound. Others around me did the same thing. Everyone's faces were a mirror image of my own horror, shock, and curiosity.
"Over here!" Someone yelled waving their hands in the hair." Someone's been hit by a car."
Everyone surged forward hoping it wasn't someone they knew. Please don't let it be Rachael I repeated over and over as I walked over to the parking lot. There was a crowd surrounding a girl laying on the ground. I immediately breathed a deep sigh of relief it wasn't Rachael, the girl was to short and had red hair.
No one moved forward so I took charge.
"Has someone called 9-1-1 yet?" I shouted stepping beside the girl and crouching down. My action seemed to snap everybody out of their daze.
"No, I'll call." A girl near me said whipping out her phone and dialing.
I took a deep breath and looked at her. I didn't recognize her which made it a little easier. She was unconscious and barely breathing, her head was covered in blood and her arm jutted out at an unnatural angle. I felt bile rise in my throat but I managed to swallow it down.
"Does anyone have a spare shirt or towel or something?" I asked.
"Here." One of the seniors took of his jacket and handed it to me.
I took it and immedietly applied it to her head to stop the bleeding. I kept firm pressure on it and with my other hand I checked her pulse. It was barely there, but it was. I lifted my hand to wipe my face and realized I was shaking. Till now I'd been on autopilot, I took a shaky breath and tried to stay calm for her sake.
I heard sirens and looked up an ambulance, flashing its lights, was barreling down the road. It pulled into the parking lot and drove over.
"Out of the way." A paramedic shouted clearing a path through the people to the girl and me.
"Are you okay?" The same guy asking. taking my hands off the shirt and placing his on it instead.
"Yeah." I said shakily. I looked down and realized I had blood on my hands and on my shirt from where I had wiped them. I stood up and wobily walked over to an empty picnic table. I sat on the bench and put my head between my legs. I took deep breaths and tried to focus on something, anything else.
I squeezed my eyes shut, but all I could see was the girl lying there on the pavement.
"Excuse me miss." A gentle voice said gently touching my shoulder.
I bolted upright and faced the same paramedic as before. "Are you all right?" He asked for the second time that night. He looked at the blood covering my hands and smeared on my shirt.
"Yeah I'm okay." I forced a smile, but I'm pretty sure it came out as more of a grimace.
"Here, let's go get you washed off." I stood up and followed him into the main building. The ambulance had left and I wondered how he would get back to the hospital.
I was still shaking as I followed him to one of the bathrooms. A few tears rolled silently down my cheeks. It could have been Rachael. I tried to push the thought away, but it stubbornly kept pushing to the front of my mind.
I fumbled for the faucet, my hands were shaking to bad and I couldn't grasp it. The kind paramedic turned the water on and I squeezed soap onto my hands. I rubbed them under the water for what felt like forever. But I couldn't seem to get the blood off. I scrubbed harder and harder digging my nails into my skin, trying to get rid of the blood.
"Hey. It's gone." He grabbed my hands and turned off the water. He pulled me gently away from the sink and led me to a bench outside in the hall.
I blinked but i could still see her blood on my hands." It's still there." I whispered trying desperately to escape his grasp and scrub it off.
"Trust me it's gone. How about we go for a walk?"
"Okay." I muttered looking up from my hands.
I walked around with him for a while and it helped to settle my mind after all the crazy shit that happened. It seems this was the craziest year of my life so far.
Soo... What do you think?
The funny thing about this chapter is, I totally didn't plan on having a girl get hit by a car. God knows where the idea came from. I was just writing and bam! But oh well, I think it came out pretty well.
I hope you guys enjoyed it!
Hopefully see you next week!
