The next morning I woke up to the smell of something burning. I quickly jumped out of bed and ran down the stairs. The kitchen was full of smoke and the smell was coming from there.
I ran over and looked around trying to spot the origin of the smoke. Aha there was a pan on the stove that was flaming. Something that I presume was bacon at one time was burnt to a crisp.
I turned off the stove and took the pan to the sink, I was careful to avoid getting burnt. I ran cold water over and doused the flames. I set the pan down on the stove and turned on a fan to get the air circulating again.
I looked around and for the first time saw my mom slumped over the kitchen table.
"Mom! What were you thinking?" I said maybe more sharply then was needed.
"Hmmm." She murmured opening her eyes, my own eyes were watering from the smoke and I opened the door to get the air moving more.
"What the hell?" I said glaring at her." You could have set the house on fire!"
"The bacon sorry." She said looking up. I noticed her eyes were rimmed in red and she looked not quite herself.
"Are you okay mom?" I asked gently this time.
"Yeah I'm sorry I must have dozed off while the bacon was frying." She said rubbing her temples with her hands.
"Do you have a headache?"
"No, no I'm fine I took the pill you left. I'm sorry about drinking I won't do it again." She said apologetically. Even thought she said she was fine I doubted it. She didn't look like herself, and it seemed like more then just the drinking of the past night. I let it go and tossed the cooled bacon crisp in the trash.
"I can make breakfast." She said standing up. She swayed and I reached out a hand to steady her.
"Mom I think you should sit." I said worried.
"No I'm fine I'll make-" She abruptly stopped mid sentence, her eyes rolled up in her head, and she collapsed. Since I had been holding onto her arm I was caught unaware and I fell down to.
"Mom!" I said getting up and shaking her gently.
I felt for a pulse and felt one,but it was very weak. My breathing had quickened and I was on the verge of panic. I took a few deep breaths and pulled out my phone. I dialed 911 and hit call.
I explained to the lady what had happened and how my mom had just passed out.
"Shake her gently and see if she responds. Stay on the phone help is coming." She said in a calming voice.
"Okay." I said my panic rising. No matter what you learned in first-aid about staying calm, nothing could help in this moment of sheer panic.
"Mom, mom." I said shaking her gently. She didn't move and her breathing was now ragged.
"She's not responding." I said a few tears leaking out." What do I do?"
"Try again in a few seconds and if she stops breathing immedietly start CPR. Do you know CPR?"
"Okay and yes I do." It took all my willpower to talk calmly so she would be able to understand me. On the inside I was scared. No, more then scared. I was terrified. I couldn't lose my mom. I had basically already lost my dad.
"She stopped breathing!" I yelled into the phone, I didn't wait for a response I dropped the phone and started pumping on her chest. Tears were running freely down my face, and somehow I was aware of a dull ache in my arm. I ignored it and kept on giving her CPR.
