If I Die Young

female!reader

If I die young bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh uh oh

You know that moment right before you die that people always talk about? Some say that your whole life flashes between your eyes in seven seconds, even the memories you tried so hard to suppress or forget. Some say that you see a white light that could either be Heaven or God beckoning you towards a peaceful end. Some say that all your emotions during only the best experiences of your life occur inside of you. Some say that you meet the eyes of death itself. But no one ever knows what really happens unless they are the ones on the hand of it.

I stand here, on the ledge of this building looking down at the multiple cars passing by, the wind flowing through my hair, caressing me like the soft touch of a loved one. The sun in the distance is setting but still illuminates the world with a taken for granted sense of hope and guarantee that tomorrow is coming, that tomorrow will come. The night will take over, washing everyone free of their stress and worry of today, and then, when the sun sun rises the next morning, everyone can wake up with a smile on their face.

I close my eyes, teetering on the edge of death and life. All my life I've been afraid of heights, but as of now? Strangely, I don't feel any fear or panic running through my veins. I don't feel the quickening of my heartbeat and the chills that run down my spine that only occurs in the face of danger. I feel... calm, tranquil, untroubled, and unperturbed.

My eyes reopen slowly and a tilt my head towards the sky, seemingly to look for any sign of God's recognition.

"Lord, make me rainbow," I say softly, my breath washing over my lips as I speak.

I'll shine down on my mother
She'll know I'm safe with you when
She stands under my colours, oh and
Life ain't always what you think it oughta be, no
Ain't even grey, but she buries her baby
The sharp knife of a short life

But, per usual, no one answers. Nothing is said in reply, only the sound of birds singing and distant traffic can be heard.
