"Finn it's almost 10 o'clock, you need to come inside before the curfew sweepers get to the river."
Millie wavered at the glass door to the backyard, with a sigh she slipped her hand off the edge of the door and closed it with a loud slam.
It's been two days since the news, and everyone's on edge.
They check our wristbands twice instead of once at school, when we arrive and when we leave. No one is to go past the boundaries or within 500 feet of the bridge, which is now heavily guarded.
Each night the same message is played by the curfew sweepers as they pass by, "curfew is now active, anyone out after 10pm will be taken into custody for question."
Several harsh bangs from the window behind me snap me out of the trance, I frantically turn around to see Millie repeatedly banging on the window mouthing something.
"They're coming finn."
My eyes widen as i realize what she's saying. I stumble forwards off the wooden bench, landing on my knees in the rocky ground. Wincing at the stinging pain I tuck my hands into the sleeves of the grey sweater, scrambling up from the ground I hop onto the deck and rip the door wide open, slamming loudly behind me as I turn the lock.
"That was too close finn", Millie sighs running her hands through her short hair, "that's the second time since the curfew, you need to be more careful or we're-"
"We're gonna get caught?", I interrupted, pushing off the glass door and brushing past Millie, "I've noticed how you act around me millie, whoever we're with sadie you always distance yourself."
"Finn that's not true-"
"But it is Millie", I scoffed throwing my hands up, shaking my head in disbelief I turned to face her, "you're more concerned for your safety than ours together, if it makes you feel better I'll leave tonight. Then you don't have to worry anymore."
Millie opened her mouth taking in a breath to begin talking, she looked up to my eyes and shut her mouth, a pale pink setting in her cheeks.
"I knew it", I laughed turning around to the hallway leading to her room, "give me five minutes, then I'll be out of your hair for good."
"Finn-", Millie yelled in a higher pitch, almost as if she was worried, "don't leave, please."
"Why shouldn't I, it's clearly what you want since you didn't tell me to stay", I bluntly replied, moving swiftly through the hallway I walked into her room.
"You can't it's too dangerous, they'll catch you and then-"
"And then they'll question me about you and you'll get taken into custody too", I lowered my voice, stopping on the soft carpet Millie's footsteps quickly caught up behind me.
"No that's not why", she said, her voice wavering.
"Well why then", I chuckled, folding my arms I turned around to see her standing a few feet from me, with that same innocent expression she always has.
