finn

so far the only interesting thing that's happened since coming back is carmine tripping over my feet.

she, at least I think it's a she, has been following me since the sewers. she's pretty nice for a stray kitten, her black fur and bright blue eyes keep me company.

i forgot how awful it is down here.

looking to my left all I can see is rows of broken down houses, garbage floating around the empty streets as the lamps flicker ever so slightly.

i wonder what millie thinks about me. maybe the police already questioned her, maybe they're on their way here right now to arrest me.

carmine rubs against my leg as we walk along the streets, looking up at my with her bright blue eyes.

   "fine, but just this once."

i place my hand under her belly and lift her up to my chest, pulling my jean jacket around her trying to keep out the cold wind.

that's one of the things I miss about sector 1, the warmth.

  shit.

another metal wall, I guess I don't really know my way around here like I thought I did.

my feet scrap against the ground as I walk back around the corner, turning onto a different path.

it's weird, usually everyone is outside collecting the garbage to bring to sector 1 in exchange for money.

carmine suddenly awakes from her nap and burrows deeper into my jacket, her small body shaking against my chest.

thunder breaks the silence around us, causing carmine to meow loudly as she grips her paws around my arm.

I look up to the sky, big black clouds already beginning to fold in. more thunder breaks, lighting flashes to the right of me.

"it's okay" I whisper, "we just need to find somewhere to wait out this storm."

rain falls all around me. more thunder followed by multiple strikes of lightning as I run through the streets.

everywhere I look, crumbled buildings or structures with people already in them.

i wasn't paying attention to anything, i just needed to find somewhere to hide.

water splashes up my leg as I fall to the ground, landing on the hard cement that's covered in water.

carmine jumped from inside my jacket, luckily I landed on the side that she wasn't hiding in.

pain flows through my right arm as I pick myself up and start running, I probably sprained something.

   "finn! finn over here!"

i squint my eyes trying to see who's talking through the heavy rain, a small figure stands at the end of the street waving their arms and shouting my name over and over again.

"who are you" i yell, standing a few feet away as the rain pelts my back.

"it's wyatt, now come inside before phase two hits."

I shielded my eyes from the rain, running into the doorway wyatt was standing by. as soon as I got into it he closed the door, three clicks of a lock following.

"it's good to see you finn."

"you too" I replied pulling him into a hug with my free arm, "how did you know it was me."

"you're wearing the same clothes as when you left" he sighed pulling away, "what are you holding in your jacket?"

"oh, her names carmine" i pulled back my jacket revealing carmine, "I found her when I was coming back over."

"seriously finn, you can barley take care of yourself what makes you think you can take care of that as well?" wyatt held back a smile as he stared at carmine, eventually running his hand along her slim back.

"I'll find a way-and what were you talking about when I was out in the rain, phase two?" I asked, placing carmine down on the ground beside my feet.

"yeah, it's a new thing they started after you left, probably to discourage people from trying to escape. it starts right after the rain stops, red drones sweep the streets looking for anyone near the bridge, if they find you-well let's say most don't live to tell the tale."

"really? all because I-" we both turned to the door as red lights shone through the cracks, "is that a drone?"

wyatt nodded, placing his arm in front of me he guided us backwards away from the door. the soft mechanical hum from the machine zipped all around us before disappearing.

"does this happen every day?" i pulled my soaking when jacket off, dropping it to the floor beside carmine.

"every day at 10 o'clock, that's around the time you escaped right?", he walked over to the wooden wall, slumping down against it.

"yeah it was, but this also happens in sector 1 at 10 o'clock" I followed wyatt to the wall, sitting beside him, "except there they don't kill you."

"figures, why would they want to kill the people who passed the test", folding his arms he leaned his head back, sighing.

carmine nudged my hand, purring softly she fell into a ball beside my hips, resting her head atop my leg.

"that cat really likes you" wyatt chuckled, reaching over to pet carmine.

"millie would've liked her too" i smiled looking down on carmine.

"millie? who's millie" wyatt smirked nudging my shoulder.

"she's just a girl who let me stay with her while I was in sector 1."

"you mean she didn't immediately report you to special circumstances?"

"no, she's like us" i sighed, "her parents were from here before they died, and she was able to get into sector one and hide under the radar. people think she passed the test".

"do you miss her" wyatt asked, the feeling of sadness was already settling in.

   "no, no I don't."
