I tucked the remaining laces into the the soles of my shoes, the clothes Millie gave me were now hanging on one of her many chairs.
Looking into the mirror I saw my old self, the dark denim jacket and black jeans yelled sector 0. If I was going to sneak back in I couldn't go looking like some rich snob from sector 1.
"Finn please", Millie whined, her voice muffled by the wooden door, "just let me explain-"
"Explain what? That you lied to me, kissed me, then kissed that guy in front of me?", I laughed, adjusting my hat one last time before giving up.
"You know I didn't realize you had hidden yourself in my closet, besides romeo isn't my boyfriend, he's the guy I told you about who knows that I'm from sector 0-"
"Is that supposed to make me feel better?", I pulled the door open allowing it to slam into the marble wall, Millie jumped back her eyes following me down the hallway.
"You'll never make it over the bridge, they'll find you and we'll both be killed", she groaned, trailed behind me.
"What makes you think I care if you're killed? you don't want me to leave because you'll get caught, this has nothing to do with your parents or feelings", I sighed, "all you've ever cared about from the start was not getting caught, and look at it this way, you'll never have to worry about me again."
I rounded the corner, the slick white door coming into my view. I knew the risks of leaving this safe haven, but anything was better than staying here with her. Who knows, maybe I'll make it back over the bridge and I'll never have to deal with her again. It'll all be a fuzzy memory of what I might've had.
"Don't worry Millie", I pressed my hand to the door, pulling it open just enough for a slight breeze to flow through, "I don't betray my friends, I'm not a snitch either."
Those were the last words I said to her before closing the door behind myself. Almost slipping down the concrete steps and across the street, where most of the bushes would give some sort of cover.
I brushed the mud onto my jeans and peered over the bush, Millie was right, the bridge was swarmed with police and extra security. There's no way I'm going to make it over that.
The leafs on the bush started to shuffle, twigs began to snap. I pushed myself away from the bush, preparing myself to come face to face with a police officer, maybe something worse.
A small black furry face emerged from the leafs, it was a kitten.
I chuckled lightly with a smile spreading across my face, the kitten crawled out further eventually sitting a few steps away from me. It tilted its head, looking curiously around. I reached my hand out towards the kitten stroking its head softly.
"Good kitten", I sighed, watching the kitten roll onto its back beside me.
I wonder what Millie's doing right now, probably on the phone with romeo telling him all about her problems.
"Hey who's out there?"
I froze. They found me, or at least are close to finding me and probably killing me on the spot once they realize who I am.
There's no way I can make it across the bridge like I did last time, and the river has too many things that could go wrong. I looked down to the cold raging river, the drop from where I'm sitting was almost two meters, and I'm not sure if the waters deep enough to conceal me.
I had almost forgotten about the kitten, looking over my shoulder I reached to pet it, but it wasn't there anymore.
I peeled back the bushes and looked down over the edge, nothing. As I brought my head away from the edge something caught my eye from across the river. The kitten was perched upon a rock, across the river.
"How did you get over there?", I whispered looking around.
That was when I saw it, I don't know how I missed it in the first place. A sewer opening was hidden under the overhang of the grass, it must go under the water to the other side of the river.
Flashlight beams passed over head as more voices approached, there must be only a few minutes until they find me if I stay here.
Without hesitation I began to slip down the overhang, landing knee deep in the river water I stuck to the side and quickly waded over to the sewer opening.
I griped the edge of the opening and stepped into the sewer. Any light I had before was gone, I dragged my hands along the walls so I could direct myself through without getting lost.
Eventually the sound of the water faded away, the only noises were my feet sloshing around and water dripping off the ceiling, at least I hope it's water.
I held my hand out in front of me as I walked along, light occasionally hit the tips of my fingers as I approached the end of the tunnel.
I wonder if the kitten would still be there.
Suddenly I found myself with no where else to go, the floor beneath me was replaced with water that stretched to the exit of the tunnel.
How did that little kitten get across without drowning?
I stepped into the water slowly, allowing it to engulf me up to my shoulders. At least I know how to swim. Every passing second I spent in the water felt like someone was going to grab my feet and pull me under.
I gripped the edge of the sewer tunnel and pulled myself up over the edge. Dragging myself out of the tunnel felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders, i collapsed with a huff onto the soft grass upon the river shore.
Turning my head to the side I was met with the familiar furry face of the kitten. I smiled brightly as I lifted my hand towards it, the little kitten melting under my touch into a puddle beside me.
Carmine, that's a good name for a kitten.
