•Hayes' POV•

So the Pearce's were coming over to our place for dinner. I was kind of nervous because Brittany was coming too. I felt like I had to 'prove myself' to her, like, impress her.

Then Nash walked into the room. He was very dressed up. He had on khakis with a green collared shirt tucked in with a brown belt.

I was just wearing khaki shorts with a t-shirt.

"Yo Nash, why are you so dressed up?" I ask him.

"Because I wanted to look nice. We are having company you know" he replies, rolling his eyes.

I just sigh and try to ignore him. I knew the real reason he was all dressed up, Brittany.

Just thinking about her made me smile. I felt like I was always thinking about her. It's a good thing she doesn't know that though, she'd probably think I was a creep or something.

It was a couple minutes till 7:00 when there was a knock on the door.

"I'll get it!" Nash shouts. "Hello! Come in"

"Thank you Nash, don't you look nice!" Mrs. Pearce says.

"Thanks. You look great too" he replies to Mrs. Pearce.

Brittany looked gorgeous, as always.

"Hey Nash!" She says, smiling.

Then, she hugs him! Why is she hugging HIM? That should be me. NOT Nash, of all people.

"Brittany!" I say, ruining their little 'moment'. Nash glares at me.

"Hi Hayes" she says, blushing. Then she comes up and hugs me too.

"Well, we've made spaghetti for dinner. Let's eat before it gets cold!" My mom says with a huge grin on her face. She was starting to really like the Pearce's. We all did really, they were really nice and everyone got along.

Well, siblings had the occasional argument, but overall we were pretty well behaved.

There were eight of us at the table, it was a little cramped, but we managed to fit.

I sat next to Brittany and Nash sat across from us.

About half way through dinner, Brittany whispers into my ear, so only I can hear.

"Hayes, can we talk after dinner?"

"Sure" I reply.

"Thank you for the wonderful dinner Mrs. Grier. It was delicious. May I be excused?" Brittany says.

"Yes of course" my mother replies.

Then she took her plate and put it in the sink.

"Mom, dad, can I go outside? I need some air and I kind of have a headache" she asks.

"Yes. But don't wonder too far" her mom replies.

"Okay I won't."

And with that, she left.

•Brittany's POV•

I needed to talk to Hayes. I was wondering if we would still be friends after we left the mountains. I really liked him as a friend, I think. Do I like him as more than a friend? I wasn't even sure myself.

I honestly did kind of have a headache. Probably from all of thinking I was doing. So I decided to go get some fresh air.

It wasn't too cold out. It had actually gotten warmer, so I was fine with my sweatshirt and leggings.

When I got outside, I noticed a big pine tree in front of our building. It was a prefect tree for climbing.

I've loved to climb things ever since I was a baby. Especially trees.

So I climb up it. I didn't go too high because I didn't want to get stuck, and it was dark.

I had been up there for about five minutes when I heard the Grier's condo door close. Someone had come outside.

"Brittany?" it was Hayes.

"Up here" I say.

"What are you doing in a tree?"

"Just thinking."

"About what?"

Should I tell him? Nah, I'll wait.

"Uh...stuff."

"Mind if I join you up there?"

"Nope. Come on up."

Then he started to climb the tree. I was sitting on a big branch fifteen to twenty feet up. It was big enough for both of us to sit on.

"Hey" he said once he sat down next to me. "Is your headache feeling better?"

"Yeah. It's mostly gone now."

"Good."

"Hayes, I was thinking. What happens to...us, when we leave here? I mean, we both live in North Carolina, but we aren't really near each other."

"To be honest, I don't know. Nash is getting more and more famous by the second, so I'm pretty sure he won't be going normal school anymore" he replies.

"Oh" is all I can manage to say.

"You know, your all I can think about now. You're beautiful, sweet, smart, and very good at climbing trees" Hayes says, catching me completely off guard.

I smile.

"Thank you, but I'm really not that pretty" I say, blushing. I'm not the kind of person to is always fishing for compliments.

"Yes you are. Your the most beautiful girl I've ever met, and I feel like I barely know you!" he says.

I laugh.

"See, even your laugh is pretty, and I'm not even sure that's possible!"

Then I blush, AGAIN. Thank god it's mostly dark outside.

Then a cool breeze blows and I shiver.

Hayes scoots closer to me and puts his arm around my shoulder.

I turn my head and start to say something.

"Hayes, I-" but I'm cut off by Hayes' lips pressed against mine.

I was very surprised at first, but then I kissed him back. I pulled away after about thirty seconds.

Hayes is smiling. And I am too.

I'm speechless. So I just sit there with my mouth partly open in a grin. I probably look like a complete idiot.

"Was that your first kiss?" Hayes asks.

I slowly nod my head and find something to say.

"What that yours?" I ask him.

"No" he looks down at our feet dangling above the ground. "But I wish it was."

That makes me smile. The he looks over at me and leans his forehead agains mine.

I close the gap between us and we kiss again. This time for about a minute. I can feel him smile under it, that makes me smile too. This was probably the best minute of my life.
