Vienna
Your peculiarity is very, very rare.
That's what Hugh had told me as we fled the burning school.
Peculiarity.
Edward had used the word when we were supposed to be heading to my second period class. He told me how him and Julianna had seen me at the airport. Edward asked me how I had made the invisible boy appear.
I said I had no idea.
He attacked me. I fought back.
Jacob could drive. He drove us back to his place and led us inside. "You'll have to talk to Miss Peregrine," He said. "Hold up," I said. "Who are all you?"
They went around and introduced themselves.
The girl who could control fire was Emma.
The invisible boy was Millard.
The boy in the tailored suit was Horace.
The boy who looked angry was Enoch.
The girl with the short hair was Bronwyn.
We already knew Fiona and Hugh, of course.
Luke was silent. He brushed his brown, wavy hair out of his eyes. He was eyeing Bronwyn.
"Wait, so what is a peculiarity exactly? Is it just a superpower?" I asked.
"Come inside and Miss P will fill you in on the details," Emma said.
We walked inside Jacob's house. Two little girls ran up to meet us. One looked about five. She had blonde baby doll curls. The other one was seven. She had light brown hair and wore a tiara. "I know you!" The girl with tiara cried. "We saw you at the airport! I'm Olive, and this is Claire."
She seemed to be talking more to Luke than to me. "I'm Vienna Nehmen, and this is my cousin Luke," I said. "You're the girl who made Millard visible, right?" Claire asked. "Do you think you could do it again?" "Wait until he's dressed," Enoch said. "I don't want to see Millard nude again." "Were you looking where you shouldn't have been?" Olive asked teasingly. Enoch looked disgusted. "Of course not!" He exclaimed. Horace started laughing.
"Can we please talk about something else?" Millard begged. "I would prefer it if we didn't speak of the scene at the airport. To be honest, it was quite embarrassing."
A woman walked into the room. She looked at Luke and I. "Hello, children. I'm Miss Peregrine," she said. She turned to me. "You're the peculiar girl. The one who made Millard visible."
"Okay, is that just what I'm known for now? I have a name you know," I said.
"And it is..?"
"Vienna. Vienna Nehmen."
"I'm Luke," Luke said. "Vienna's cousin."
"Luke... Lukas Blitz?" Miss Peregrine asked.
"Uh, yeah," My cousin replied.
Something flashed in Miss Peregrine's eyes. Mr. Blitz," she said carefully. "I must speak with you later, but right now we have other things to discuss."
"Okay," Luke said simply. He had stopped looking at her. He was now watching Bronwyn once again. I nudged him.
"You like Bronwyn?" I whispered.
Luke looked down at me and smiled. "Maybe. She's pretty. I'd like to get to know her."
"Millard," Miss Peregrine said. "Go upstairs and get some clothes on."
Millard ran upstairs.... I think.
"Tell me about what happened at the school," Miss Peregrine said. Emma and Jacob took turns explaining, with a dramatic remark thrown in by Horace or a sarcastic comment added by Enoch here and there. "There were some wights there," Emma said. "You were fighting one of them, weren't you, Vienna?"
"Yeah. I totally beat him," I boasted. "Didn't kill him, but I injured him pretty badly." "I killed mine," Luke said. "She was talking about torturing you, Vienna. I got mad and there was an explosion and all of the sudden she was laying on the ground, dead."
"Can you try to make it happen again?" Bronwyn asked.
He looked at her and smiled. "Sure."
He closed his eyes. The next thing I knew, two balls of lightning were sitting in my cousin's palms. Luke opened his eyes and grinned.
"How's that for you?"
"Your peculiarity must be the ability to control lightning and electricity!" Olive yelled excitedly. Enoch rolled his eyes. "Obviously," He muttered. Bronwyn shot him a glare.
Millard, now dressed, came back downstairs. It was an odd sight, seeing an invisible boy in clothing. "Cool peculiarity," He told Luke. "I've always wondered what it'd be like to control electricity. I actually-"
"Nobody cares, Millard," Enoch snapped.
"I do," I snapped. "Would you knock it off with the sarcastic, rude remarks? That's my job."
Enoch scowled.
Honestly, I really didn't care about what Millard was going to say, so I quickly changed the subject.
"When are we going to talk about my peculiarity?" I asked. "Nobody freaking cares about your peculiarity, Vienna," Enoch said. I started towards him.
"I AM GOING TO STRANGLE YOU!" I yelled.
Lucky for Enoch, Luke doused the lightning on one of his hands and grabbed my arm.
A spark of electricity ran through my veins. I noticed that right when I touched him, the lightning on his other hand fizzled and flickered and went out.
When I moved my hand away, it instantly returned.
Miss Peregrine was pale. "You have a very rare peculiarity. In fact, people and wights would kill for it. Jack, my brother, has told me about this before," She said. "Miss Nehmen, you can touch somebody and take their peculiarity from them. All you have to do is tap into it, but here's the catch; once you do tap into it, if you ever touch that person again, the peculiarity will become a part of you, like you were born with it. If you're touching one for too long, then it will become permanent- you could rob somebody of their peculiarity."
"What are all your peculiarities?" Luke asked.
"I can fly," Olive said.
"I have a backmouth," Claire said shyly.
"I have fire powers," Emma exclaimed proudly.
"I see the future in my dreams," Horace explained.
"I can bring dead things to life," Enoch said, bored.
"I have a bunch of bees living in my stomach," Hugh said. "Fiona can control plants." He looked at Fiona lovingly. She beamed at him.
"I can see hollowgasts, which are basically monsters that try to eat us all the time," Jacob said.
"I have super strength," Bronwyn explained.
"I'm invisible," Millard said.
"You know, if you never said that I never would've known," I told Millard sarcastically.
Enoch glared at me. "And you're telling me to cool it with the snide remarks," He snapped.
We glowered at each other for a moment.
Then, I got an idea.
"I can test out my peculiarity, right? Like the tapping into it thing?" I asked Miss Peregrine.
"If you wish," she replied.
I walked over to Enoch and took his hand. He caught on to what I was doing instantly.
"NO!"
He tried to yank his hand away, so I grabbed onto his arm for instead.
I shut my eyes and tried to tap into Enoch's power. After a minute or two, a rush ran through my body. That's when I knew I'd obtained to peculiarity.
"Do you have anything I could bring to life?" I asked Enoch. He rolled his eyes and, using his free hand, took out a little clay soldier. I willed it to come to life.
It stood up and began walking around.
"Yes!" I cried, throwing my hands in the air. Of course, when I stopped touching Enoch, it stopped moving, a dead thing once more.
Angrily, Enoch picked it up and shoved it back into his pocket. "Thank goodness that wasn't permanent," He said, shooting daggers at me. If looks could kill, I'd be dead. "Stay away from me, Vienna." He turned and stomped out of the room.
"I will gladly stay away from you," I muttered. "You're like a dark cloud on a sunny day."
Hugh, Emma, and Luke all heard me say this and burst out laughing.
"Do you think you could make Millard visible again?" Jacob asked. "Sure," I said, grinning.
I walked over to Millard and put my hand on where his shoulder would be. He immediately turned visible.
His dark, beautiful blue eyes stared back at me. He had brown, thick hair. Long eyelashes framed his eyes.
Everybody gaped at him.
"I'm not attractive, am I?" He asked. "I knew it!" "Actually, you're wrong," I said quietly. "You are attractive. Not exactly hot, but you're nice to look at."
Millard stared at me in shock.
All of the sudden, the door flew open. My mother came rushing into the room.
"Vienna! Luke!" She gave me a hug, then walked over to Luke and hugged him, too.
Mom's eyes were darting back and forth between my cousin and I. "I thought they got you," she said, out of breath. "I was so scared."
"Who? The wights?" I asked.
Mom glanced at Miss Peregrine, who nodded.
"Yes," my mother said. "That's why we move all the time, baby girl. They've been after the two of you since you were born."
"Both of us?" Luke asked. "I thought Vee had the special, rare power."
"Yes," Mom said hesitantly. "She does. But, Luke, they've been after you because they feel like if their leader were to die, then you'd be the new one."
"Their old leader, who is dead now, is my brother, Jack, or Caul as some know him," Miss Peregrine added.
"Why did they think I could be the new leader?" Luke asked, his brow furrowed. "I'm confused."
Mom took a deep breath.
"Luke," she said. "You know your father? My brother? That man is not your dad. We are not related at all. I am not your aunt. Vienna is not your cousin. Caul is your real father."
