Vienna

"Wait," I said to Lisa. "How do you know about all of this?"
Lisa just grinned at me, running one of her hands through her hair. She wore a black muscle shirt and skinny jeans.
"What happened?" Claire asked, nodding at her arms. Lisa's smile faded. "It's a long story," She replied stiffly.
She had scars up and down both of her arms from her battle. No, the battle wasn't with somebody else, but with herself. She had recovered from her depression last year, but things still got bad again sometimes. The mental illness had haunted her for three years and she started cutting when she was fifteen. When she was sixteen, her parents finally found out and got her help. She doesn't cut anymore, thank goodness. She's finally learned to love herself.
"I'm gonna ask you one more time, Lisa," I said. "How do you know all of this?"
Her dark eyes sparkled. "Why don't I explain this when we're not in the middle of an overcrowded airport? Let's go to my house, Vienna," She told
"So," Lisa whispered to me. "This your boyfriend?" She nodded at Millard. "He's hot, I guess."
I blushed. "We're not dating. How's it going with Jess?" Jess was Lisa's girlfriend.
My friend frowned. "Things didn't work out. We broke up yesterday." "Sorry," I said, giving her a one armed hug. She sighed. "It's not your fault, Vee. We'd been fighting a lot. I'd been leaving a lot and she thought I had a side chick. That's not true, of course. I'll tell you about it later. Why don't you introduce me?"
I nodded. "This is Millard. Fancy Pants over there is Horace. The one who looks like a doll is Claire. The one who wears a tiara is Olive. The scowling kid is Enoch. Emma's the blonde girl. The adult is Miss Peregrine. Jacob is the one with the brown hair."
Lisa grinned. "I'm Lisa, everyone. Nice to meet you. We'll talk more about this at my place, yes? Great." She turned and headed out of the airport.
Millard stared at her in awe. "Well, she's certainly something."
A feeling I recognized as jealousy flared up inside me. I shoved it down. Why was I feeling this way now?
We walked out. "It's going to be a tight fit with all of you," Lisa said, nodding at her van. I'd been inside before, and it had a 2-3-3 seating.
"I'll drive," My best friend said. "After all, it's my van."
"This is the ugliest car ever," Enoch muttered. I froze and looked at him. "It's kind of rude to say that her car resembles your face," I snapped. Jacob laughed. "Need some ice for that burn, Enoch?" Enoch just stared at him. "I didn't get burnt, Jacob? I'm perfectly fine." Jacob sighed. "It's just a stupid thing people say nowadays."
The seating arrangement in the van went like this; Lisa in the driver's seat and Miss Peregrine in the passenger seat. I sat in the middle row, shoved up against the wall with Millard next to me, Jacob next to him, and Emma on his other side. The seat was only meant for three, so it was tight. Olive, Enoch, Horace, and Claire sat in the very back and I could hear them all fighting.
"Everyone buckled in?" Lisa asked, starting the car. A chorus of "Yes" went up. Lisa turned on the radio, and a popular song filled the car.

I'm jealous
I'm overzealous
When I'm down I get real down
When I'm high I don't come down
I get angry
Baby, believe me
I could love you just like that
And I could leave you just as fast

It was a good song, and I knew all the words, but I didn't sing along. I lost the confidence to sing in front of people about six years ago.
Lisa, however, was sick of caring what other people thought, and belted out the lyrics.

Cause I've got issues
And you've got 'em too
So give them all to me and I'll give mine to you.

"Lisa, would you mind sharing how you know about peculiars with us?" Emma asked impatiently. "Sure," Lisa replied, turning down the music a bit. "You all know what a ymbyrne is, right? Your headmistress is one."
"I don't," I said. "It's the lead woman who watches over a peculiar home. She takes peculiars in and houses them. She also creates and controls time loops," Lisa explained. "I'm a ymbryne in training. My great grandmother was one, and I've been going to see her quite a bit lately to train. That's why Jess thought I was cheating on her. She claimed that I was too busy for her and that she thought there was someone else. I told her it wasn't true, but- well, this isn't about my love life. This is about you guys. Why are you here, Vienna? Miss P sent me a message that you'd be coming, but she didn't tell me why. Where's Luke? Aren't you two connected at the hip or something?"
We quickly explained what happened to Luke and Bronwyn.
"Man, Vienna," Lisa commented. "It's been rough, hasn't it?" I smiled and rolled my eyes. "No way, Lisa," I said sarcastically. "It's been super easy." Lisa grinned at me through the rear view mirror. "It was a rhetorical question, Vee," She responded.
I started out the window as we drove along next to the beach. I had missed the ocean more than I thought I would. The song quietly changed.

We were staying in Paris
To get away from your parents
And I thought 'Wow'

"Hey, Vienna, Reid's peculiar, too, believe it or not," Lisa said. "I found out the day after you left." My mouth dropped open. "You're kidding! What's his peculiarity?"
She smiled. "You'll have to ask him. Anyways, he's waiting at my house. He knows you're coming, but not the other peculiars. Reid's excited to see you, Vienna, though he might be jealous of that thing you've got going on with Millard."
I smiled at the thought of seeing Reid again. "There's nothing going on between Millard and I," I insisted. "Better not hold hands around Reid, unless you want him to get the same impression I did," Lisa told me. Millard's brow furrowed. "Who's Reid?" He asked. "He's the boy Vienna's in love with," Lisa replied, an evil glint in her eye. I blushed. "Shut up, Lisa," I snapped. Millard made a clicking noise with his tongue.
We arrived at Lisa's home. "Finally!" Enoch cried. "I've been stuck next to Olive for too long!" "You're not complaining about being stuck next to Horace, Enoch," Olive said grumpily. Enoch muttered something under his breath.
We entered Lisa's house and the smell of tobacco and food filled my nose. Lisa's mother, a woman with short black hair, walked into the room. She began to speak in Chinese, but noticed the rest of us standing there and quickly switched languages. "Vienna! Hello, sweetie, I thought you moved to Florida!" She exclaimed. "Well, I'm back now," I said, grinning. "Lisa, dear, your father's out on the back porch with a cigarette. I was just about to join him when you arrived back," Ivy Chang said. "Who're your friends?" I helped Lisa introduce the other peculiars. Reid walked into the room with a small smile on his face. "Hey, Vienna," He said. "Hi, Reid," I replied. Ivy scolded Lisa in Chinese about something, and my friend smirked for a moment, but stopped when her mother glared at her.
Reid was handsome. He had red brown hair and hazel eyes. He was tall and wore jeans paired with a gray shirt. "Let's go to my room," Lisa said with a smirk. Reid's eyes drifted to my hand, which was still laced with Millard's. "Are you two together?" He asked. "No," I said immediately. "It's not like that at all." Millard stayed silent. He just stared at Reid.
"Millard, quit staring at Vienna's boyfriend," Horace said. Millard ignored him. "I told you, we're not together. Good grief, Horace, are you deaf? Or stupid? Or both?" I said, annoyed. "Once again, let's go upstairs," Lisa sighed, now annoyed and impatient. "We have a quite a bit to discuss."
