I walked down the long corridor. There were small blinking lights that went green, to re, and back to green. The corridor was dark, way too dark. The small lights being the only light source.
I walked until I past a window. The door to the room was steel and looked like a door to a vault. The only thing that made it visible in the dark hall was the green lights it had. I pressed the button on the side and saw the door slide into the wall, making a loud hissing sound.
I walked inside, and the sight of what I saw made my heart sink.
The room was lined with cold, metal beds. It looked like a hospital ward, but grimmer. Each bed something inside, covered by a white sheet. I peeled a sheet back, and I was horrified by what I saw.
Underneath was a man, and he wasn't breathing. None of them were, in every bed there was a body, all were dead. I uncovered everyone, and everyone was the same.
Each were shaved, and they had lines running down their legs and arms. Their mouths were stitched shut and they had no ears. They felt cold, but they looked like they were still alive, waiting to wake up. I got a closer at them, and they had a bar code tattooed to the neck, just like the one I have, except under theirs it said EXPIRED.
I turned away from the horror behind me and I turned to a laptop sitting across the room. I looked through some files, although I didn't know what I was looking for, just something that would help me.
"It's been hell here. Donovan keeps telling us to improve the HERCULE virus to the point where the test subjects won't be human anymore... They'll be some kind of .... A monster. The new HER-12 strain looks promising. But he wants more." A tape recording played on the laptop. I clicked through some more.
"Some of the new doctors are questioning our methods of experimentation. They believe it to be immoral. I, however, can see the benefits the world will reap in after we perfect the HERCULE virus. Specially my son..." The voice in that tape sounded... Evil. Cold, lifeless and evil.
I played one more tape, this one was of Donovan and the man from the previous tape. "Have you made any progress yet?"
"Not yet, Donovan. We found a way to improve the newest strain of the HERCULE, but there are some... Technical difficulties."
"Difficulties?"
"I suggest we use the HER-12 strain instead, sir. With all do respect sir, these new improvements... They're like cripples to the new advantages you ask. I insist.."
"Perhaps you should be reminded who you are, Warren."
"Yes, sire."
The tape ended. And now I was confused more than ever. Why would Donovan want a better version of the drug he's already perfected? The answer came to me. Power. That's all he wanted.
I wouldn't let him have it. That's what my father stood up against, and because of it he was killed.
I felt something hit me hard. "I thought you knew better."
I saw Donovan looking down at me, smiling. One more hit knocked me out. And I fell to sleep.
