You were driving down the winding road in the country, Evan in your passenger seat and Connor in the back.

"Evan, plug this in," Connor reached to the front, handing Evan the end of an AUX cord. Evan obeyed his command and seconds later loud rock music flooded the car.

You playfully yanked the plug out. "I will not have this godless music in my car! Evan, plug mine in. Play..." you thought for a second, "'Dead Girl Walking.' We will be listening to showtunes, like upstanding young citizens."

"Showtunes?" Connor asked, disgusted. "Seriously? I fucking hate musicals."

The song started playing through the car speakers.

"You realize this is literally rock music, right?" Connor said, thirty seconds later, kind of disturbed. "And definitely more godless than mine."

Connor had sat with you and Evan during lunch the rest of that week. You guys actively talked in English class, too. He was actually really cool and pretty easy to talk to and you were glad you had finally worked up the nerve to speak to him.

"We're here!" you announced, pulling into the abandoned apple orchard. The three of you climbed out of the car.

"What is this place?" Evan asked.

"My family used to come here," Connor said. "Isn't this place closed?"

"Yeah, so?" you said. "It's still nice. I found it when I first came to town. Come on!"

A few hours later, the three of you were sitting on the ground in the shade facing each other, like a triangle. You leaned into Evan. The three of you were laughing, but you looked up and watched the two broken boys be genuinely happy, and your heart swelled a little.

After the three of you caught your breath again, you announced something, "I have a proposition for you guys, so I wrote a song."

"A song?" Evan asked, confused.

"Yep," you said. "Want to hear it? I promise my singing is actually awful."

Evan and Connor exchanged a brief glance, and it made you smile a little, even though you knew they were thinking wow this girl is such a weirdo and the anxiety of it made your stomach hurt.

You burst out in song before they could say anything, adding little actions and bopping around, animatedly.

"Oh, and one more thing that's worth mentioning
That guy from our school, Jared Kleinman?
Yes, the insanely cool Jared Kleinman!
I think we should start to make him apart of this awesome friendship we have
A part of this awesome friendship we have
This adorably heartwarming friendship we have!
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!
Cause all that it takes is a little--"

You looked at Evan expectedly, but he was blank-faced, and, honestly, confused. You finished awkwardly, "Yeah, that's all I have. Sorry."
