The next morning, I woke up to a loud banging by the front door, and it didn't take me long to figure out who it was. Maya. I had no idea when she had even left last night, but she must have left while I had been fast asleep, probably trapped in another one of my nightmares.
I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and turned to look at the clock. It was 5:07am. Great, this was just great and so not what I needed this early in the morning. I walked out in the hallway and turned on the light. My eyes flickered a couple of times in an attempt of getting used to the room that was no longer consumed in darkness, but I must admit it wasn't working. My body definitely wasn't functioning this early in the morning. With my eyelids half covering my eyes, I walked over and unlocked the door, only to reveal a drunken Maya falling to the floor. "Thank you" Maya said smiling up at me, and I faked her a smile. "You're so nice you know that, you really are. You're really, really nice" she muttered, and I couldn't help but let out a laugh. Nevertheless I was hoping this wasn't going to become a bad habit of hers.
"C'mon sweetie," I said trying to get her on her feet, but with her being 5'9 and me only 5'6 feet it wasn't the easiest task. "Maya, you really shouldn't drink this much," I explained, realizing it was pointless. In the state she was in, there was no way she would remember anything by noon.
"I'm not drunk," she claimed, while trying to get up on her feet but fell again. I wasn't buying her words because her bloodshot eyes, and the state she was in told me otherwise.
"Okay then. Whatever you say. Lets get you to bed," I said rolling my eyes at her and helped her to bed.
"Who was with you?" I asked, while taking off her shoes. If she wasn't alone it would make me feel just a little better, however I didn't like the fact that she was already coming home this late on a school day. I sounded like such a mom.
"Harry," she stated simply closing her eyes before drifting off to sleep, and I covered her with her comforter.
Of course she had been with him. I wasn't surprised to hear this since I knew they were friends, but I just couldn't understand why she would hang out with him. He was clearly troubled and his demeanor was out of control. One day he was this really nice and genuine guy and the next he wasn't. Maybe Maya was using him too?
I walked back to my room and got back in bed, while thinking of Harry. Even though I didn't understand why he had a way of constantly creeping back into my mind, I was glad that for once I was thinking less about everything that had happened in my past.
The second time I woke up that morning it wasn't due to Maya but due to my alarm and Ramones' 'Pet Sematary' filling the room. I let out a grunt not wanting to get up. I never really liked school, I mean I loved the learning part and I had had great teachers in High School, but I hated the cliques. To me, it didn't matter whether you were popular or dating a jock. I just wanted to be happy, something that lately had been quite hard to fulfill. I got out of bed and headed towards Maya's room. I knew there was no way she'd get to school if I didn't and even though that wasn't my problem I couldn't help but care. I let the notes of 'Pet Sematary' fill Maya's room as I entered. She was a mess and she smelled far away of cigarettes, alcohol and something I couldn't place. Something sweet.
"Stop the thunder," she mumbled with closed eyes which had me laughing.
"Hun, it's 8am," I spoke softly. "It's time to get up," I tried, knowing it might be pointless. She was like a little child in the morning.
"No! And you can't make me," she snapped, and I let out a sigh. It really wasn't my job to get her up and to school. She was a big girl she could take care of herself, but unfortunately she didn't act like one.
