Chapter 8!
I simply stared out the window in the back seat of someone’s car. Either Sam’s or Adam’s I didn’t care. I ordered them to take me home, refusing their offer of staying at the warehouse overnight.
The dark, luminous woods passed us with measured speed, my forehead turning flat and cold against the glass of the window. I eventually close my eyes and yawn. I knew Sam was constantly checking in the rear view mirror at me, but I ignored him. I had to deal with my thoughts.
As we enter back into town where houses began to fill my vision, and small town shops. I began to get nervous and on edge. I fiddle with one of my many bracelets on my left wrist, playing with the small charm it had hanging there. It was a metal cut circle with a cross inscribed in the middle of it. Simple but significant.
‘Just the grey house on the right’ I murmur, finally feeling the car park against the curb. I take a breath in slowly releasing it.
I grab hold of the handle tugging it open, stepping out of the car with my bag at my hip. I close the door softly, my bracelets clinking together noisily in the dead quiet sleeping street. Another door opens and I glance down to see Sam get out as well.
He doesn’t say anything to me, just begins to walk around the car to the front door. I frown, not sure what he was doing but follow.
Once we stop at my door I shift my gaze to Adam still in the car as he watches us, he waves to me and I lift the corners of my mouth in an effort to assure him.
‘Em….’ Sam starts sounding perplexed, I look up at him. He is dragging his hand through his messy dirty blonde coloured hair again, shifting his weight. This breaks my lips a little more, as I take him in.
‘Sam I’m okay….’ I put in, watching his face closely. ‘Clearly not because-‘.
‘Sam?’.
‘Yes?’.
‘I’m doing okay… nothing close to alright, but okay. I won’t lie like some other stupid girls do. But just give me some time?’ I reply, looking up at him hopefully. He gazes into my eyes, like he was trying to find something in them. He nods and seems to wearily place his hands upon my shoulders. Not sure if he should touch me, or not. But he was right to touch me, because it sent a pleasant warm glow in the pit of stomach which had me more relaxed and safe.
‘Ring us anytime… and I mean anytime. If you need anything, or want to talk about it’ he pauses. ‘And we will talk about it,’ he says, sounding so sure of himself. ‘When you are ready… I need to know what happened tonight’ his voice takes on a whole other tone, I haven’t ever heard from anybody.
Those green eyes capture me in my place, and I feel myself nodding. This makes him smile in reassurance, and he gives a squeeze to my shoulders… before slowly pulling his arms back to his sides.
Without saying anything more, he turns and heads back down the ramp of our front door. ‘Sam?’ I call softly, making him stop and slighty turn. ‘Thank you…. The both or you’.
He nods the corner of his mouth curling. Before he walks around the front of the car to the driver’s side, and gets in.
I bite my lip as I watch them drive away, the realisation finally settling. They were there for me.
