Chapter 31

‘As we are shifting to the cooler months you should be expecting storms starting to develop, though for the next week it will reach only-‘ the weather lady was rudely interrupted by my older brother groaning loudly on the sofa across from me.

‘Seriously! My new apartment better have heating for this weather or else I’m moving out!’.

He hadn’t even moved in yet.

I shake my head at him and turn up the volume on the TV. ‘-has been warned for frequent weather changes and wind directions. People are advised to pay close attention to the next few weeks as we are receiving early tornado signs. Thank you, back to you in the studio-‘, I lean back against the cushion and sigh. I did prefer the winter months because you could snuggle up, compared to summer where I usually got short tempered; so a little rain or snow shouldn’t be a problem, right?

‘Mum can you make me a hot chocolate!’ Dan yells behind him like the stupid 21 year old he was.

‘When are you moving out again Dan?’ Mum jokes sharing a secret smile with me. ‘Not soon enough’ I mutter teasingly and get a cushion thrown at my face.

I stood frozen in my skinny jeans, boots and coat, outside the cute little coffee shop nervously waiting for Jake to arrive with his boyfriend. Today was the day to meet Callen and they were being fashionably late; glancing at my clock.

‘Emilyyy!’ Jake sang and brought my attention to my right. I smiled warmly despite the cold biting me in the ass this very second and shook hands with Callen. ‘Callen this is my very supportive, beautiful, hard-ass best friend Emily I was talking to you about’ Callen’s smile was excited before he enveloped me in a hug. He was wearing a green snapback and a jumper that really suited him.

‘Nice to finally meet you Callen’.

‘Lets get inside before my balls fall off’ Jake intercepts jogging on the spot before grabbing Callen’s hand and leading us into the front door. My eyes close blissfully from the sudden heat we’re hit with and the smell of all the cakes make my mouth water. We find a nice table to sit in towards the front and quiet enough to hear each other.

‘Can I get a blueberry muffin please?’ I ask politely as the waitress turns to the boys but as soon as she sees Jake’s arm resting on the back of Callen’s chair her sweet smile turns sour. Chewing the inside of my mouth anxiously to see how the waitress will react, she says, ‘What do you want?’ giving them a very impatient, dead type look.

Callen stops Jake for saying anything offensive and says himself, ‘Sorry but isn’t it a policy to treat every customer the same?’ his eyebrows raise and I switch over to see her face.

‘Just tell me what you want, we’re real busy today and I don’t have all day’.

‘We don’t want to order anything, thank you’ Callen says calmly as the girl rolls her eyes and mutters her frustration under her breath with a mix of swear words. I lean on the table and make eye contact. ‘We can go somewhere else guys… I don’t mind-‘.

‘Thanks Em but we have the same right to be here as everyone else, we just won’t accept anything if that’s how they treat us’ Jake smiles over at Callen and they lean against each other.
