Sam's Pov

Up ahead I saw my slim chance to get away.

An old junk yard full of machines and broken down cars had a huge metal wired fence keeping anybody out. But I knew I could make it over those barb wire circles, lining the top. ‘Jay!’ I shout over to him on my right, he has a huge grin on his face as he runs closer to me. I nod towards the yard, and his teeth appear through his smile. ‘Let em’ rip!’.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Shots fire, way too close to my comfort as we take the detour towards the junk yard narrowly missing garbage cans. ‘You’re dead Sam! F**k you both!’ I hear yelled at me from behind, which I think was Quinn. Followed by more shots, as I see dirt at my feet spurt as bullets hit the ground.

‘Shiiiiit….’ I mutter as I take that extra energy to propel myself up against the fence. My fingers hurt as my body weight is unbalanced against the hold I had on the wire, but I soon find holes where I can place the tip of my shoe for support.

I feel the fence shake, and look beside me where Jay is now climbing like me to the top where the real fun begins…..

‘Get down here you pussies!’ Quinn shouts angrily from below. My eyes take a split second to see him raise his gun up at me, that I swing myself over the other side of the fence. Where my pants and hoodie get caught on the barb wire, and rip as I land hard on my legs to then fall on my side. Jay makes it over as well.

‘Here!’.

A load of cash is directed at me after helping each other up, as we run further into the junk yard, passing rusted cars, and stacked tires. ‘What’s that for?’ I ask, perplexed.

‘You’ve got the job dude!’ Jay says grinning like an evil doctor, before smacking it in my pocket and separating himself from me.

I don’t stop to think about anything else as I head home myself, as the gun shots die down and the raging threats can’t be heard.

The house is dead quiet, with the exception of my ragged breathing at the front door on the porch. I finally made it home after running most of the way back, keeping a close eye to any vehicles pulling over or anything seeming suspicious.

Jay’s last words ring in my head once again.

“You’ve got the job dude!”.

I sigh, pushing my right hand through my dirty blonde hair, staring at the old timber ridges of the front steps. What did I think about this new job?

Crazy, exhilarating, stupid, dangerous, an adventure….

Something that I can provide better for my family with. I nod to myself as I feel the clump of money stashed in my hoodie pocket. I creep around the side of the house knowing the front door would be bolted, and slide my bedroom window up before climbing in. I take off my converses so I don’t make as much noise against the wooden floorboards, and take off my ruined jacket and pants sliding on a new pair of sweatpants from my drawer instead.

I glance once more at the clothes laying on my bed, the money still inside. Turning to check on everyone. I’m positive no one followed me home… if anyone did I would either send them a very clear message through using my fist why they should have never done it, or we move.

That thought twists my gut, picturing Maddy having to leave her friends and teachers… Jane just wouldn’t talk to mum or me for weeks.

I shake my head. No one followed me home.

I slowly creek open the door to Jane’s room with all her signs and symbols signalling no one to enter unless permitted. Peeking my head in and seeing her form curled like a ball on the red sheets.

I smile.

Slowly and as quiet as I could I walked over to her bed in my socks. Pulling a new blanket over her shoulders that she wasn’t lying on, and lifting some hair out of her mouth I resist the urge to laugh. I press a kiss to her shoulder, not wanting her to wake and throw a fit at me for kissing her skin and entering without a password.

I shut her door, and enter Maddy’s.

Her low sweet snores fill my ears, and makes me yawn. I glance up at her sunflower clock on the wall telling me it was well past one in the morning.

With Maddy I had trouble finding her form under all the fabric of the pink blankets and the soft toys she won at her school fundraiser.

Her blonde curls cover her face, as some strands catch air from her snores and fall softly back on her cheek.

I kiss her temple and make sure the blankets are not over her head.

Lucky last of my three precious gems was mum. Her paperwork was scattered from left to right, and I try not to notice some cardboard boxes in the corner as I near her bed. For a moment I just look at her and I can’t see her stress for once. It’s almost like I can see the way she use to look when all we had to worry about was the girls not becoming mud monsters before dinner.

I step forward to give her a kiss but step on one of Maddy’s squeaky ducks that she has an absurd name for.

Squeak!

She stirs and mumbles something I can’t understand before her eyes flutter halfway open. I step back a little and crouch to her bed level to not to scare her.

‘Mum…?’.

Her eyes slowly find mine and widen. ‘What are you doing up honey?’ frowning.

‘Just couldn’t sleep again… I wanted to check on you’ her palm came up to my cheek as she looked thoughtfully at me. ‘You haven’t been sleeping well lately….-’ She pauses. ‘Is that cigarette smoke I smell?’ she asks, her eyes meeting mine. I swallow. ‘No..’.

‘Samuel Lee Jackson I swear to god, you better not be smoking pot late at-!’.

‘I’m not mum! I’ve been out with a couple of guys from the construction site and they smoke like there’s no tomorrow…’ I huff staring at her, trying to push that in no way it was me. Mum’s eyes narrow on me, and this is when I feel uncomfortable because I don’t know what she sees in mine.

‘Ugh!’ she falls back onto her pillow rubbing her temples. ‘Just go jump in a lake or something, you stink’ she mumbles under her hands, and I grin laughing softly. I bend down to kiss her cheek. ‘I’ve been raised by the most amazing person on Earth… do you expect me to do something as stupid as smoke weed?’.

‘Sorry what did you say?’ she asks teasingly, tilting her chin to the side expectantly. ‘Something about being the best mother in the universe?’ she shrugs but as I catch her gaze sadness shades their beauty. I swallow and lose my own smile leaning my forehead against hers. ‘I wouldn’t want any other mother…’ I whisper, knowing she needed to hear a stable truth for once.

I kiss her forehead smiling softly at her. ‘Get some rest… you know Maddy wakes up way too early for her age’ she nods the corners of her mouth tilting. ‘I know’.

I give her one last look, before disappearing back down the hallway to my own bed, feeling the tension slowly release itself from my tired body. Kicking the ripped clothes under my bed, along with the money.
