Chapter 5

Emily’s pov

This past week I have been hanging out with Adam, who has been kindly updating me on Sam. ‘Em, he won’t listen’ Adam replies frustrated, one day while we sit in a café drinking smoothies. ‘Why not? Because of his family?’ we go into silence, before I speak again. ‘I’m sure his family wouldn’t want him pushing himself like he is, any more than we do’.

‘Em….. his family doesn’t know he is fighting for money’ Adam replies quietly, looking down at his shoes. ‘But what about his injuries? Don’t they notice?’ I question frowning, concern seeping into my tone of voice.

‘He tells them it’s construction injuries… he says he is a builder’ the corners of his mouth curve slightly, as he sighs. ‘Smart kid at times, I have to say’.

‘So his mother doesn’t suspect anything? She believes him?’ Adam nods in reply. ‘So he’s finished school then?’.

Adam glances up at me, not sure how to answer. ‘Sort of…. He graduated I think. He doesn’t tell me everything these days’ he looks disappointed in that, and I pat his hand on the table in a comforting gesture. ‘I’m sure he’ll start to act rational soon enough…’.

In photography our teacher explained what was expected of us. ‘I want everyone to brainstorm ideas for your project. Which will be lighting, angles, colour, texture, landscape or portrait, and added effects if need be… now does anyone have questions about what to do?’ no one speaks, and she nods for us to start.

I pull out a piece of paper out of my folder, and begin to come up with ideas to present my photography. First choosing the theme of my shot, and continuing to draw sketches for examples.

I had decided to show two sides of living. On the left would be an ordinary family house, with no expensive features. Then on the right I would go take a photo of a rich house style of living, lushes gardens, paved water features all that kind of thing. On the computer I will set them either side of the portrait page, showing only half of each house to then create one whole house with two sides. Blurring the middle together for a merge kind of effect.  The photographs will be in black and white.

‘I want everyone to take the necessary pictures tonight, ready for Monday’s lesson to present. Take care of these cameras, and if they are damaged in any way you will need to pay for a brand new replacement. I will be checking them when you return. Remember think creative, and try to add new aspects, or to send a message through your shot’ Ms Hamsworth smiles at us. ‘Your dismissed’ I gather all my things, packing the camera carefully inside its case then into my bag.

‘I’m home!’ I shout from the front door, setting my keys in the dish that is in the hallway. ‘In here honey! I want you to meet someone…’ mum calls. I curiously enter the living room, and see another lady sitting down next to my mother who is in her wheelchair, beside the couch. They are both drinking steaming tea with chocolate coated biscuits.

‘Emily, I would like you to meet Dorothy. She will be my home carer, so you’ll be seeing a lot of her’ I smile warmly over to the middle aged women who was returning the smile. She had glossed black hair neatly tied into a long braid between her shoulder blades. ‘Nice to meet you Emily, I hear your studying photography?’ I nod.

‘I would love to see some of your takes some time, if that’s okay…’ her tone of voice was genuinely interested, and I grinned at her. ‘Definitely’ I reply already liking her, something about her seemed to understand me. My mum seems to be pleased with my reaction and sets her tea in her lap. ‘Mum I’m going to be out to take some pictures for my project, I’ll be back around…’ I glance at the clock. ‘Six?’ she nods smiling at me. ‘Sure honey… take your phone’.
