Chapter 3
Emily pov
It landed on…. Heads.
Best out of three?
‘Em come down here for a sec!’ Dan yells, and I give an evil stare to the coin on the floor, before leaving.
‘What?’.
‘Were you on the internet?’ he asks, watching me walk down the hall. ‘No’ I frown. ‘It’s stuffed again! I told you when I’m on the internet no one else can be…’.
‘I wasn’t even on it Dan!’ I begin to defend myself.
‘Sureeeee….’ Dan drags, unbelieving and ignorant as usual.
‘Maybe it’s stuffed from you playing Call Of Duty twenty four seven with your mates! Soon you won’t even move away from it to go to the toilet… we’ll have to put you in nappies because you’ll shit yourself!’ I smile sweetly at him, batting my eyelashes.
His eyes narrow on cue, and he starts growling at me.
‘Shut it you two… Dan get off your lazy ass, and drive me to the clinic.’ Mum orders, then she looks up at me. ‘Emily please take a night for yourself… go out, you hardly do anything anymore’ she says with a sympathetic look.
I nod, giving Dan one last innocent look. As he pushes her down the ramp of the front door, helping her inside the car. Folding the wheelchair carefully in the trunk.
I feel the piece of paper in my back pocket like a ten kilo weight.
‘Fine!’ I huff and ring the number, biting my thumb nervously as I hear it ring. Having second thoughts, as the ringing continues….
‘Hello?’.
‘Hey… this is Adam isn’t it?’ I hope, sounding like an idiot.
I hear him laugh. ‘Yeah Emster, this is he’ he says with amusement slipping his tone of voice.
‘I knew you would call’ I could basically smell the smile on his lips over the phone. ‘Very funny…’ I smile as well, despite myself.
‘So you want the fight details or not?’ he says, getting straight to the point. I couldn’t resist.
‘Yes’.
‘You’re in luck’……..
I’m standing next to Adam in the familiar warehouse, with many people as the fight is about to begin. ‘So… at the beginning of every fight the contenders need to shake hands beforehand, since it is only polite because they’re about to pound the living daylights out of each other-‘ he sees my stricken expression and laughs. ‘I’m just kidding, but it is a sign of respect’ he says in all seriousness.
‘Okay,’ he continues. ‘People bet on who is going to win by tactics, appearance, experience and of course…. If they personally like them enough to gamble all their money on him’.
‘Right… and what in the end, the winner gets all or?’.
‘The contender who won receives a percentage of the money which we collect, and losers lose,’ Adam shrugs. ‘It’s all about knowing your component, in and out of the cage… but occasionally it does get dirty’ we watch as Sam enters the cage, focusing all his attention on the man standing on the other side. The opponent looked much larger, and older. But Sam didn’t seem to be fazed by this, as he rolls his shoulders back.
