Chapter 35

PREVIOUSLY....

‘Emily,’ he was fighting a smile against my frown and was gently caressing my arms. Was that a good sign? Was it a bad sign?

Leaning in closer he nuzzled his nose along the side of my neck and I shut my eyes against my will, feeling his lips at my ear. ‘I’m in love with you Em, more and more each second I spend with you.’

Opening my eyes I turn my head and capture his lips with mine, no kiss ever powered behind so much conviction.

Sam’s Pov

She was in my arms. The girl I loved. And I couldn’t be more thankful.

The paramedic returns from checking on Mr and Mrs Harris, to politely interrupt my murmurs in Emily’s ear. ‘Excuse me, but I do need to complete her check up before I can clear her.’

I nod and kiss Em’s cheek before approaching a police officer. ‘Excuse me?’

‘Yes?’

‘Is it too early to tell what caused the fire?’ I question, glancing at the black, smoke stained side of the house. Something turned in my stomach and a strange feeling came over me.

‘It’s hard to tell. Fire fighters are judging from the direction it could well have been sparked outside the house, rather than inside…. really, we need further investigating-‘ the police officer is broken short by a call from one of his colleagues near the scene they were beginning to tape off.

‘Sorry, that’s all I can tell you at this stage.’ He briskly walks and discusses what he was called over for.

Sparked outside? Temperatures were freezing this time of morning, grass was iced over how would a fire begin in the middle of winter?

‘Sam? Is that you?’

I turn around and face Mrs Harris. ‘Hello Mrs Harris, how are you holding up?’

She shrugs, looking past me at her home being blocked off before addressing me with an answer. ‘I just pray not too many memories will be effected by this,’ looking me in the eye.

‘Did Emily call you?’

‘No, I came with Dan.’

‘Oh.’ Her eyes were distant as she simply stared at her house before Mr Harris walked up to us.

‘Sam. Did Em call you?’ he stood behind his wife, resting his hands on her shoulders.

‘No sir, I was staying at Dan’s…’ I felt I needed to add something, stage a question, but thought otherwise, drawing up a blank as I glance towards the ambulance if they’d cleared Emily yet.

‘Well… thank you for coming. I’m sure Emie could use some extra support right about now.’ Smiling tiredly he excuses himself and Mrs Harris to talk to the police on further news.

Emily’s Pov

‘It’s a perfect idea!’ Dan complains, looking hurt.

‘It isn’t that we don’t want to stay at your apartment, it’s the fact there will be no room! Because I can picture Mum and Dad sleeping on the living room floor.’ I say sarcastically. We were sitting on the back of the ambulance while they were packing up and Dan was still insisting we could all fit in his small apartment flat.

‘You can sleep in my room on the roller bed, Sam’s already taking the couch and-‘

‘Sam?’
