Chapter 1

6 months later…

Emily pov

The breeze brushed up against my body, laying on the green field of my colleague. My best friend next to me, tapping his fingers to Bliss ‘n’ Esso. My skin pleasantly took in the sun’s rays, as they shone on both of us. ‘Here comes Charming…’ Jake sings, groaning quietly. I feel the absence of the sun first, then next thing I know is lips crushing mine passionately. Someone clears their throat obnoxiously loud, and I pull away. Ash glares at Jake, so I reach up to touch his cheek. He looks back at me, seeing what I meant through my eyes, and asks.

‘Are you coming to the game tonight?’.

I shrug against the grass at my back, saying ‘Maybe’.

Ashton frowned, his deep blue eyes projecting the common storm. ‘Maybe isn’t good enough for the football captain’s girlfriend’. I breathe through my nose in agitation. I never attended any of these school events… I had lost the vibe and hype about it a long time ago. I normally rejected Jake when he asked me, coming up with excuses. But this time….?

‘Okay’ I reply softly, reluctant as hell. Ash kissed my nose gently smiling warmly, and headed back to his mates pleased. ‘Why do you say yes to him, and not me?’ Jake asks perplexed. I glance over at him, as we both lay back down. ‘You know how he is, when he’s upset…’ I trail, and he nods knowingly. Playing with a blade of grass, between his fingertips. ‘I probably won’t even go, because I’m working late tonight’ I deflect, staring up at the puffy white clouds above my head.

Jake shakes his head beside me, smiling. ‘Someday girl…. you’ll find him’ he says, confusing me by his choice of words.

‘Hey Emmmm…’ Maggie says, with puppy dog eyes. I laugh and raise an eyebrow in question. ‘Could you give me a ride home..?’ tonight we both finished fairly early, and so Phil told us we could leave before clean up. ‘Sure Maggs.. just hold on, I need to change out of these clothes’ I tell her.

I change out of my waitress's uniform, and neatly folded it in my bag. ‘Okay all set?’ I asked her, grabbing my car keys, she nods grinning.

I pull out of The Tyrant’s staff parking lot, and turn onto the main road. ‘Okay, where am I going?’ I ask her, since I hadn’t ever been to her house before.

‘Okay, the next stop light left’ she directs, ‘Then keep following this road, till you see the primary school’.

‘Now turn left, and right onto this road. Right here’ she points and I place the car in park. Maggie hugs me over the console, and smiles warmly. ‘Thanks Em, you didn’t have to, at this time at night’ I watch her until she is safely in her house, and then drive off.

Okay…. Left, then right…. I think back to her instructions, trying to make out familiar objects in the darkness.

I frown as I have now been driving in circles for the past fifteen minutes. I huff and try another street to see if this would lead me back to the primary school.

I glance up, searching for it but nothing but old neighbourhoods and warehouses. Lights are on at one, and there are a lot of cars parked at various places. I pull over, and get out leaving my bag in the car with my cell phone.

I walk cautiously to the door and try it. The warehouse opens.

‘Hello?’ I ask, but it is mainly dark, only the occasional light overhead. I hear voices from a nearby door and open it to find five old men playing poker. ‘Excuse me, do you know where-‘.
