What happened here?

A police officer came up to me, asking if I knew the person who lived in the house...

"Yes, my grandmother. I live here with her too. I just came back from work overseas. W-what happened, officer?" I asked, afraid of the answer.

His face softened and he could barely look at me. Nonetheless, he clenched his fist and looked me in the eye. Was what he was going to say that hard? My heart picked up the pace.

"Sorry, Miss. There was a break-in here just about half an hour ago. Someone broke in and stabbed your grandmother. A neighbour who was having his early morning jog happened to notice a suspicious man jumping into a window and contacted us. The paramedics are working to keep your grandmother alive as we speak. Afterwards, I would like you to check if any of your valuables or cash have been stolen," he informed me.

The police officer left after informing me he would be back in a while to ask me some questions. He probably gave me some time to breathe before firing questions at me.

My heart that was beating fast initially came to a brief halt. A chill went down my spine and I trembled. My breath hitched. No. It could not be. For all these years we've lived here, why now? How did this happen? Could she have been saved if I stayed at home? Perhaps I should have gotten someone to take care of her. I shook my head repeatedly, unable to believe the situation. Halmeoni would be alright. I just had to keep thinking positively. It had always worked. Nonetheless, a tear slid down my cheek.

I tried to calm myself down as I saw the same police officer approaching. I wiped the stray tear.

"Look, I have to do my job here. It's hard with all this but just bare with me for a few minutes," he mentioned.

He could barely make eye contact with me. He seemed to know something.

He held his notepad with a rather shaky hand. He began asking me questions such as my name, relation to the victim, how long I had lived with her and possible suspects. Who would come and hurt an innocent old woman? That was cruel.

Before he could move on, I saw a stretcher being pushed out the empty doorway. The paramedics rushed to the ambulance, no time to spare. On the stretcher laid my beloved grandmother, limp and lifeless. I could see the stab wound in her abdomen. One of the paramedics covered it and applied pressure to the wound. The side of the stretcher where the stab wound was had some blood on it too which frightened me. I rushed to the stretcher but was held back by one of the paramedics.

"Halmeoni..." I called out to her weakly.

Tears brimmed my eyes.

"I'm sorry, miss. Are you related to her?" she asked.

I told her I was her granddaughter and instead of sitting in the back, she told me to sit in the front. I looked back to where my things were and a neighbour of mine told me she would help me handle things here. I trusted her as we had helped each other over the years so I was fine with it. I managed to say a quick thank you before I was lead to the front seat.

As the ambulance moved off, sirens blaring, I sat in my seat, weeping quietly. Although there was a little window that allowed me to look back to where my grandmother was, I refused to look. Seeing her just now was enough torture.

As much as I wanted to cry out and just let myself break down, I was very conscious sitting next to the driver of the ambulance. I did not want to distract him from his driving. Due to that, I kept a straight face the whole ride. I held back my tears, focusing on the road.

I got to experience first-hand how fast an ambulance was. In about 10 minutes, it travelled a 20-minute distance. I got out of the ambulance when it stopped at the A&E. I knew paramedics would push you away once they got to the doors of the operating theatre and the separation would be hard so I just trailed behind the stretcher, quietly praying for my grandmother's health.
