She stared horrified. Natalie had never seen anything so unreal in her life. Her hands that were clutching the bed had turned white and she knew her eyes were the size of saucers. The growl that filled the air was monstrous, her ears were still ringing from the pure magnitude. She watched the angel shake, his muscles rolled as he seemed to grow inches taller. His shirt ripped as his wings sprung out and his eyes were no longer pretty and discolored but pits of endless black. They held an emotion she thought the being would never show. Fear. What would such a being have to be scared of?
She made sure to stand up slow and take small precise steps towards his figure. His breathing had become uneven and heavy, almost as if it was a chore. He clamped his eyes shut and she watched amazed as his fangs grew past his bottom lip. His hands were clenching and unclenching. Blood slowly trickled from his palm where his nails had lengthened into talons.
"What are you?" She whispered, stunned.
A laugh slipped past the fangs, sending a shiver up her spine. 'Run!' The word echoed over and over in her mind. A command to get her body to move. Why couldn't she move?
What she thought was her saving grace, an angel, had turned into what looked like a beast. He stood glaring daggers at her as she studied him. Nothing else had changed on his beautifully sculpted face besides his eyes and teeth. His muscles though, they had grown at least three sizes bigger. He had to be at least a foot taller and his wings, they were the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. The shine to them almost made them look like leather. Bat wings, maybe? She couldn't tell but they had to be at least six feet wide. Just magnificent!
He watched her with keen eyes as she took a tentative step forward, but he didn't move. She slowly walked until they were face to face. His expression didn't change. His eyes were narrowed and his pink lips drawn in a thin line. His eyes jumped to her arm as she raised it to touch him. He didn't miss a thing.
A light growl escaped when he saw her go for his wing, but he didn't move. She gasped as she lightly rubbed her fingertips along them. How was that possible? They looked to be made of rubber or leather but she had never felt something so soft. Softer than any silk she had ever felt.
She heard a noise that sounded a lot like a purr as she ran her whole hand down his wing. She smiled to herself. She went to walk the full length around him before he noticed and retracted his wings almost all the way to his back. As she stood behind him, his wings flared back out.
"Impossible!" She whispered, in awe. In the middle of his back were two slits that ran along both sides of his spine. She barely touched them and giggled as she felt him shiver. They were real. The site where they were attached were as smooth as the rest of his skin. As if he had been born with them. It didn't look as if they had been surgically placed.
She tapped the creatures shoulder to let him know she was coming back around. She couldn't speak; could barely think. It was unreal, unheard of! She couldn't help but pinch herself. "Shizniz." She muttered to herself. She rubbed the spot on her arm. It was all real.
His face was emotionless as she faced him again. His black eyes staring straight into hers.
"How?" She whispered, scared to break the trance. He was letting her close.
The beast growled before his wings full retracted. His fangs and nails shortened once more. It was unbelievable to watch. His eyes shut tight and he took a deep breath. When he opened his eyes again, she knew he was gone.
Two eyes that were the color of green and blue were glaring down at her. "What the fuck just happened?" He ground out, each word said with precision and finality. His tone demanded an answer. One she didn't clearly have. She didn't have an answer for him, when she wanted to know the answer to the exact same question.
"Who are you?" She wanted to know. No, needed to know. She felt something inside her pull with the need to know everything. He hissed at her and if looks could kill, she'd be six feet under.
"Austin Lake."
Her eyes scrunched before she realized he was talking about his name. Not really the answer she was looking for but it was as good of a start as any.
"What are you?" She tried again.
He shook his head and looked away seeming uncomfortable with the conversation. "I don't know. Whatever you want to call me. Beast. Monster. I don't really give a damn." He gritted out. She grinned to herself. If she knew one thing about the situation, it was that he did not like her and hated her questions even more.
"I'll just call you Austin then." She giggled when she saw the surprised expression.
"When can I go home?" She had to ask. She had a job. Friends. Family. A life.
"Never!" Pure fire shot through his eyes and she had to stop herself from taking a step back. She brought a small smile to her face while trying to hide the hurt in her heart. She was coming to like his beast, her angel, a lot more than the man. She took a deep breath and tried to steady herself. She kept her smiled plastered on like a second skin - a mask. She tried to think logically, tried to think of the best way to go about things.
"I'm going to need things though."
He blanched. "Thats it? You agree with no argument?"
She studied him closely once more and knew that even if she kicked and screamed, she would never get her way. Her eyes blinked. She would escape, she knew that much. It would just take planning and precision. The perfect timing. She would bide her time.
"What else am I supposed to do? I could even use a little break." She shrugged, trying to show that it didn't matter to her. It did.
He looked at her as if she was an alien. It was actually pretty entertaining. Shouldn't she be looking at him that way though? He was something she had never seen before. He was dark and beautiful. He wasn't human, not entirely.
She was intrigued. He was something she would never of been able to imagine. And what an imagination she had. The man had done nothing to hut her as of yet. In fact, he had saved her. Excluding the fact that he had taken her as prisoner right after. She wasn't going to put her curiosity aside because of that little bitty detail. She couldn't. It just wasn't in her nature. It also wasn't in her nature to give up either. If she went back home, she was as good as dead. She was a walking target with Cole strolling the streets. It was something she would have to think long and hard about before she made her move to escape. Everything had to be perfect. Her mind started running, thinking of every possible scenario. None ended well for her.
Speaking of that. "What about Cole? He saw you?"
A dark laugh escaped his perfect lips, one that didn't hold an ounce of humor. "No one will believe a crazed man, freaking out about how he saw a monster. You, on the other hand, seems more reliable."
"Why me?" She asked completely confused.
"First off, you aren't freaking out. You are cool and composed. So you won't be talking like a person who belongs in a mental institute. That would make two people making accusations. Than again, no one would probably believe you in the first place. No one can breathe a word of me though. Plus, we are moving places tonight. I have a second hide out that is actually a house and more suitable for a woman."
"Awe!" She cooed, enjoying getting under his skin. She didn't know why, but it brightened her mood as she watched him bristle. "You care!"
His scowl deepened. "I will never care!"
